Why does that require a trach?

Greenville player severely injured in game vs Madison Central. Making tackle. CPR, shock, and tracheotomy performed on the field. He has been airlifted to UMC. Please say a prayer for player and family.

The combination of CPR and a tracheotomy is so extremely rare, especially due to an injury that could be consistent with football, that I think you may have been misinformed

Phrenic nerves (coming off at C3-C5) innervate the diaphragm. Injury at upper cervical spine takes that nerve out.

High cervical injury above C3.

Anything above C3 is essentially the brain stem.

A trach won’t help you then

Maybe they just bagged him and hooked up the ied pads.

Hard to imagine a shockable rhythm with an injury like that.

Christ. I can't imagine what that kid was feeling.

If that's true, the outlook is pretty grim. That's Christopher Reeve territory if the injury is survived.

Idk what any of this means but it doesn’t sound good. Poor kid.

Praying for the player who tackled him, as well.

The nerves signalling his diaphragm to breathe were broken...his brain couldn't control his ability to breathe.

I'd be willing to bet the kid who got hurt was the tackler. The other kid involved is still going to live with this, though.

Yep

This is a head down tackling situation where the head gets snapped up rapidly

Sad for everyone involved

I found this on a State message board.

"I was there watching Madison Central. Kid went down after making hard tackle. Trainers did CPR for 20 minutes until the ambulance finally arrived. No ambulance was at the game! Wow. Lots of tears shed for that young man. Word is he had a pulse when he left the field. Prayers."

Usually is. The Chucky Mullins situation comes to mind

OT medical professionals - having to perform a tracheotomy after a football hit? What could it be?

I would guess a Jefferson fracture with some possible basilar invagination with a cord contusion and likely injury to the medulla. That could take out the Vagus and the Phrenic as the others suggested. So, can't protect his airway and can't breath.

But who knows. Just a guess.

No ambulance at game?

Every game in every bootleg texas or La town I’ve been to has an ambulance there.

At least they finally got him in proper care. Wish everyone the best
