Greenville player severely injured in game vs Madison Central. Making tackle. CPR, shock, and tracheotomy performed on the field. He has been airlifted to UMC. Please say a prayer for player and family.

OT medical professionals - having to perform a tracheotomy after a football hit? What could it be?

God that is some scary shite. I can’t imagine that Dr. would be prepared to do that during a football game

Game was cancelled as well. Horrible thing. Can’t imagine being a parent and that happening to my child.

Worst the doc was expecting was a torn acl. He did a trach. Probably a safer airway than trying to intubate and having to manipulate the neck to get the trach in, considering the likely injury.

Man, that is so sad. Unfortunately, there is very little chance that he will not be pronounced brain dead in the next couple of days. Prayers to him, his family and the community.

Damn, prayers sent to this young man and his family. It's a game most all of us love, but at the end of the day, it's still just a game. A shame.

I doubt you would see that kind of injury from a football hit. More likely, there was no one there who was able to intubate and the EMT or team doc elected to go for the trach.

I can’t intubate for shite but I can damn sure do a cricothyroidotomy. It’s quick, easy and a sure thing when you have to have it. Can be done with a pocket knife and a bic pen if needed.

Awful.

Not sure if it compares but there was video of a soccer player last year who got kicked in the throat...didn't even look like a bad hit. He collapsed to his knees, gave a choking motion to his bench, and soon went unconscious. The medical staff attended to him and, when lifting him onto a stretcher, it was plain as day the guy was dead...purple. Apparently his aorta was severed below the skin, essentially drowning him. Not sure if that's the case here, but the immediate trach makes me wonder.
