I remember hearing an old timer on TV—might have been Beano Cook—saying we should go back to leather helmets in football. His reasoning was there would be more small injuries but less spinal and head injuries as players would naturally be more careful.

I don’t know.

That would be crazy to see leather helmets.

I'm not sure about helmets, but remove shoulder pads and make people tackle instead of going for the big hit.

I don't hear much about paralyzing injuries in rugby. There may be a lot relative to the number of participants and I just don't know about it.

I know there were a bunch of deaths in football in the early 1900's before helmets. I'm not sure if leather helmets helped, I assume they did. I've always felt that pads just create more violent hits myself.

Do you agree with Joe Paterno on bringing back the leather helmets?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)

I have said for a number of years that a big problem in college football is the helmet. Paul Hornung, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski wore leather helmets. These players today use their helmets as a weapon. I know you were joking but seriously, the helmets are an issue these days.

Found the kids Instagram, on one of his pictures he has on there he’s making a tackle with his head down. Could be just a one off thing, could be the reason he’s in this mess right now.
Hoping and praying he can make it through this okay.

Every game in every bootleg texas or La town I’ve been to has an ambulance there.

I'm at 20 games a year in La

You'd be amazed how many don't have ambulances there

ould guess a Jefferson fracture with some possible basilar invagination with a cord contusion and likely injury to the medulla. That could take out the Vagus and the Phrenic as the others suggested. So, can't protect his airway and can't breath.

Sometimes I swear some of you use times like these to use as many medical words that we have no possible way of knowing as possible.

Most of those deaths were from flying wedge

Rule changes ended a lot of those

Hard to compare neck injury stats with rugby since so many more kids play football. Football helmets and pads do allow for harder hits than in rugby, and I think anyone would agree. At the college level, football players are also faster and stronger than rugby players, and generally it’s the tackler who will be hurt which will usually mean linebackers and DBs.

I don’t know anything about injuries to the spine, is this something he can completely recover from?

That, and making the flying wedge illegal.
