High-Cervical Nerves (C1 – C4)
Most severe of the spinal cord injury levels
Paralysis in arms, hands, trunk and legs
Patient may not be able to breathe on his or her own, cough, or control bowel or bladder movements.
Ability to speak is sometimes impaired or reduced.
When all four limbs are affected, this is called tetraplegia or quadriplegia.
Requires complete assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, and getting in or out of bed
May be able to use powered wheelchairs with special controls to move around on their own
Will not be able to drive a car on their own
Requires 24-hour-a-day personal care
According to this, not likely

I’d say at this point it’s going to be a miracle if he lives.

Let's just say it's not looking good.

With these kinds of catastrophic and devastating injuries, I often wonder if the true miracle is not surviving them.

I remember hearing an old timer on TV—might have been Beano Cook—saying we should go back to leather helmets in football. His reasoning was there would be more small injuries but less spinal and head injuries as players would naturally be more careful.
I see people down voting you but you're absolutely right. To all the people that disagree let me ask you this. If leather helmets are so dangerous then why aren't people dying on the Rugby field left and right? They wear no helmets at all.
Being cladded up like a medieval Knight gives players a false sense of security and allows them to turn their bodies into weapons and utilize all their momentum in direct, focused attacks instead of breaking down in pursuit, wrapping up a player and dragging him down, wrestling style.

Is there anything out there yet to help the player and his family?

To the people who bitch about the new rules in football about targeting... THIS IS WHY THEY HAVE THOSE RULES.
Eventually people will stop playing and risking serious injury.

it doesn't stop people from doing it.
It's poor tackling technique. Do they even teach proper technique any more.

Concussions are usually the guy getting tackled, but spinal cord injuries are usually the guy who is doing the tackling (often with the head down).

No ambulance was at the game! Wow.
I believe in Louisiana it's required to have one, although I know this is Mississippi. My department sends an ambulance out to every local football game whether jr high or varsity. Although I don't work many games myself, I work some. Thank God I've never been in a situation like that, worst I've had football related is broken bones, although had a scare with a hard hit that caused chest pain on a kid once and caused an irregular heart beat. Yeah, we made him go to the ER.

Pretty rare, I'm a medic, not a doctor but only time I've performed them was from anaphylaxis, where the airway was swollen shut by the time we got there.

I've been to at least 4 games this year that did not have one

Sure. It all depends on the type of cervical spine fracture. But I will say no more.
