Louisiana is gearing up to run a massive $1.36 billion grant program aimed at ensuring that every community, no matter how rural, has access to high-speed internet.

Officials say the result could be transformative.

“It’s the cornerstone of how our state is going to grow. It basically allows all of the people in rural Louisiana...to participate in our digital economy,” said state Rep. Daryl Deshotel, R-Marksville, who chairs the House Commerce Committee and has sponsored the law that regulates the grant program.

Over 140,00 locations — including schools, households, hospitals, businesses and public safety facilities — “lack the kind of internet speeds that they truly and richly deserve,” Veneeth Iyengar, director of the state Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity, told the House Commerce Committee in a meeting at the state Capitol on Monday.

That's a lot of money to spend for poor people to look at tik tok all day.

I know you live in rural louisiana to get away from the city, but guess what, we're going to bring the city to you, and make you pay for it too.

File this under shite that the gov't should have no business being involved with.

Utility company gets a subsidy and then strings a fiber optics cable on the telephone poles. There can be some digging involved but it goes pretty quickly. It's not a big deal. And again, the utility gets a government subsidy.

I live in a rural parish and I’ve been hearing this for over 10 years. Even had Mary Landrieu come to our parish to promote this. I’d love to know what happen to all the grant money back then when they were promising high speed rural internet.

Disagree. Like it or not, the internet is becoming a utility just the same as water and electricity. If you don’t have access to high speed internet at a competitive cost, the area will not develop moving forward.

I hate government waste and constantly look for ways for government to cut spending, but allowing areas to gain greater access to high speed internet is not something I’m going to bitch about.

If this becomes a jobs program like the NOLA SWB though….

Interesting that Mr Deshotel is the qualifying party for a telecom/low voltage and tower construction company.

I am normally on the side that this is wasteful spending, but it is a grant. So might as well use it. Either we get the grant or some other state gets it.

It's still pointless. Rural broadband is available via starlink and other options as has been mentioned previously

I agree this is actually insane when you can get 300 Mbps down from Starlink already.

Sounds like typical good ole boy handshake wheeling and dealing.

What if I told you in easily ~20 years this will be the primary form of communication.

Seems like it'd be cheaper to buy them starlinks.

Do you live in an area with bad internet? I have some relatives who do, and it's honestly shocking how much bad internet negatively affects your life these days. Everything is done on the internet now. In rural areas, buying some things online is almost a necessity now unless you want to do a whole lot of driving.

Do you really think a $1.36 billion gov program is anything but a slush fund for the politically connected?

LA could contract with Starlink for 1/10 of the price, get better service, and be done with the project in a quarter of the time, but no one gets greased in that scenario.
