It’s worth 10 bucks to me to NOT have to change my clothes. Spilling dirty oil on the pavement once convinced me to not want to do it anymore. Want to save lots of money, quit drinking. In 22 years, I’m sure I saved enough to afford oil change fees.

Not an issue changing oil. The issue is properly disposing of old oil and filter without breaking the law. How did you do that?

I use to change my own oil. If I purchase everything myself from Walmart it came out to $28 including tax.
My dealership charges me $34 including tax.

My dealership charges $400 for the oil change, but that comes with full periodic servicing scheduled maintenance. Yes, I’m overpaying, but everything gets taken care of and the car runs great.

It's not so much the money to get the oil changed by someone, as it is the time it takes to get it done. I bring mine to the dealership b/c it's free, but it takes them 2-3 hours to do it, even though i bring it in first thing in the morning and they claim it's first come first serve.
I don't even want to get it done for free anymore b/c i'm not waiting for it. I can do it in 20 minutes.
If I take it to the quick change place, then it's $80, when i can do it for $30.
And the biggest thing with having someone else do it, is relying on someone else. twice now i've gotten my wifes car back and they didn't put the gasket on drain plug so the oil leaks. And nothing pisses me off more than when they put water in my windshield wiper reservoir and dilute my rainx. No i don't need you to rape me on wipers or an air filter.

Parts stores have containers to buy. Once containers fill up take it to a parts store and they will dispose of the oil and give you the container back

OP, when you change your own oil you should also take a few minutes to rotate your tires, and also learn how to change out your own filters, wiper blades, and top off other fluids. Won't need to do them every time you change your oil, but you should learn the signs for when you need to change them out.

I changed oil for 3 years in college. After those years in the pit, I gladly hand over the extra $20 for them to change my Accords oil.
Oddly, my Jeep came with 2 years of free oil changes, every 5000 miles. I moved out of state and used my last one here in TN. The new dealership called me like 3-4 days after that and said if I leave them a five star review On their feedback form they’ll give me another 2 years of oil changes. Gladly said sure.

This thread comes up all the time and it always breaks down to two types of people:
1. Guy who grew up working on his car, has lots of tools, and enjoys working on his car and knowing how it is functioning by looking at the Oil quality and the amount consumed (in between changes).
2. Guy who only likes cars to drive and to get from A to B. He does not desire to own tools nor take the time to learn how to work on cars.
These groups will never agree. I am in group 1. I enjoy working on one of my cars or motorcycles while listening to classic rock music. I feel safer knowing my car is well taken care of and I can see problems ahead of any serious repairs. Example: I saw that my wife’s vehicle was slowly consuming more oil between intervals. I did some research and found out the VCM was causing premature wear. So I paid $99 for a wiring harness to bypass the VCM and the vehicle consumes no oil. Compare that to a secretary at my office who’s mother’s vehicle (same year as my wife’s) had complete engine failure and had to pay to replace it.
My son, no matter how much I try to teach him, does not care about cars and how they work. He will always be in group 2. He will pay more money in the long run, but to him it is worth it.
We are both right.

Same for me, plus Ford put the oil filter in an impossible place for people with only one elbow per arm. I could pay $40 for an oil change but I don't want to wait an hour for them to get to it. I end up paying $80 to have it done quickly and I can't get to the filter anyway.

I worked at a 10 minute oil change shop through high school and college. I’ve done countless oil changes and brake jobs. I refuse to do them myself now. I gladly pay someone to do both of our vehicles and I probably have two of the easiest vehicles to change oil myself. Screw that.

If you buy a container for oil you can get several oil changes before having to take it back and dispose of the oil.

My F150 takes 8qts of full synthetic, it's $100 every oil change. I changed mine myself a couple weeks ago with the shutdown going on, cost half that, so I bought some wiper blades too with the savings.
Side note, frick the engineers at Ford for putting the oil filter in the most inconvenient place possible. They knew it was such a pain in the arse that they designed a pour spigot into the frame for the oil leaking out of the filter hole while you change the oil. Thanks Assholes.

I honestly just don't have the patience to change my oil. It takes no more than 30 minutes out my day, and I'm only out of about $40. Hell Ive gotten it done for $20 a day if the specific shop has a deal going on I get some people just love to work on cars, but I have never been that way. Oil changes are too inexpensive for me to be doing it myself
For most car repairs I will gladly defer to a mechanic shop. Id rather not spend all my time trying to research the car, parts needed, getting under the hood trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing. And once all of that was done I didnt even do the job correctly.
