re: Finally changed my own oil yesterday and am pissed at how much I’ve been paying

I only change the oil in my trucks and tractor and mower. Everything else would require me keeping ramps etc because they're low. I notice the prices are creeping up now on the changes, so I may have to change over but for now it's worth it to me to have it changed by a quickielube place.


As far as oil disposal goes, I won't say how I dispose of my oil. It would bring out all the virtue signalers.

Exactly. I changed my own oil for 15 years until about 10 yrs ago.
Now, I have no problem paying $75 to drink a complimentary diet coke and play on my phone while someone does this for me in about 8 minutes.

Clearly someone doesnt understand cost analysis. If you buy a $300 vacuum, and use it 100 times, then you spend $3 per usage + energy cost. Now you have to factor that $3+ dollars into the cost of each and every oil change that you do yourself

Same thing for an air compressor, used to air up the tires, + energy cost

Same thing for windex and towels, except they are a fixed cost per use. You can only use them so many time before you are forced to re-supply

Thats just bullshite. The business has supplies on hand, you have to purchase yours whether online or in a trip to the store. Plus, you are just one guy, so you are constantly changing positions. Whereas the business has 2 guys working underneath and in the vehicle at the same time

So from start to finish, time to obtain oil, filter, pans, funnels at cost, preforming work, checking and refilling levels, as well as all cleaning, driving to a proper disposal location, and replacing used equipment into storage (unless youre trashy) simply cannot be done in a few quick minutes.

Factor in $15 wage for that hour, plus his $30 in materials, and the $5+ in usage/energy costs of necessary equipment, then he "paid" $50 to change his own oil. I usually get it done for $69.99 or less

So he didnt save $50, he saved at the most $20. And probably neglected all the other areas of his vehicle in doing so

I bought a vacuum for my house, I can use that same vacuum for my vehicles. I also have a $30 shopvac for my shop that I can use for my vehicles, and often do.

So fricking what? The windows of a vehicle are smaller than my bathroom mirrors and represent a tiny fraction of the surface area that I use glass cleaner on. Glass cleaner is also very cheap on a per-ounce basis, especially the concentrated commercial product I use. The cost for my vehicle would be in fractions of a cent and with better results.

It is easily done as the time used to get materials and dispose of uses oil is combined with other trips. I buy several oil changes worth of oil and filters at once too. My used oil container holds 5-gallons and only needs to be taken to the nearest automotive supply store every 6 months or so. It's obvious you are a lazy, clueless, and grossly ignorant individual on this topic so it's probably better you never attempt any kind of automotive maintenance since you'd just screw it up. Sucks to suck but you are what you are kid...
