Damn. Didn't realize properly disposing of motor oil was a hot-button issue. That's a little sad, but I guess it's just par for the course back home.

My car is too low to the ground to get under. I just pay the shop for the use of their lifts. I'm also a little lazy, so while I'm paying them for the use of their lifts, I also pay them to unscrew the drain plug, wait five minutes, put the drain plug back in, and put 8 quarts of 5W20 in the top.

Most places you can just take it back to where you bought the oil. Costco has an oil fee added to every qt. This covers recycling your returned oil. Autozone will also take used oil.
We have a heater at our shop that burns used motor oil. Saves us a ton on heating costs in the winter.

Growing up I changed the oil in all of my grandparents vehicles, 2 tractors and a snapper lawnmower. We always dumped the oil along the fence row in the field and any ant pile encountered on the way

I started changing my own oil again after not doing so since I graduated from college.
Jiffy Lube was constantly trying to upsell me on wiper blades and cabin air filters. And they weren't all that "Jiffy", waiting over an hour to get an oil change.
The last straw was when the guy tried to tell me I needed new wiper blades and I had just changed them the week before.
I watched a video on YT where an independent tester guy compared Amazon Basics full synthetic to Mobil 1. The Amazon oil did as well as or better than the M1.
5 quarts of Amazon full synthetic is $20.00.
And on my truck I don't even have to use ramps.
The wife's car is a 350Z so I have to use ramps for it, but still worth it. I can do both vehicles in under an hour.
Oh, and I bring the old oil to Jiffy Lube. Win win.

Not sure why you’d pay $80 to begin with. $40-50 is pretty normal.

Not crawling under a car in the heat to save $50 bucks, have not changed oil myself in 40 years, but I will replace a radiator, water pump, or other bolt on parts if it saves $400 or more.

I can change the oil in all 3 of my vehicles without even using a jack (one is a little awkward, but can be done) and Advance Auto takes the old oil for free.
That said, I haven't been able to find 5qts of full synthetic AND a filter (of an even decent brand) for 30 bucks. I can get the oil for that if I watch the sales though.

But the place I go, always tops off my windshield washer tank with tap water. Did you count that in your savings?
