No kidding. I change oil on our four vehicles and do any other work which isn't out of my pay grade. Last night I changed the alternator and serpentine belt in our little Acura. A few weeks ago I changed the throttle sensor in the Yukon. Most of the regular maintenance stuff is surprisingly easy once you get under the hood. Although it always seems like there is a complication in pretty much every job, there is satisfaction in solving small obstacles.

I just bought a new car in December. Those "free" oil changes ain't free.
They're added in to the extended warranty packages the dealership offers. The Honda I bought had 4 different extended warranty offers- two different lengths of warranty and how many years of free oil changes you wanted. And I could only get the free oil changes if I bought the longer extended warranty (which I was going to get anyway).

You’re also paying for them to check all your fluid levels, air pressure, check all your lights, give your car a quick once over, and allow you to practice your ability to resist up selling.
Plus they assume the liability in case of an oops.
I get a coupon once a month so my oil changes are only about 30-35 bucks. Totally worth it once every 5k miles.

Both our vehicles are full synthetic oil. Every 5,000 miles, I pay about $50. Includes oil change and tire rotation. Also let's someone who knows what they are doing take a look at things and make sure there are no weird sounds, etc, that I would not even recognize.
So I save 20 per oil change x 4 per year (2 per car) = $80 a year. Man... what would I do with all that money?
Or, I can have the car dropped off in the morning, leave, go home, have wild passionate lovemaking with the Missus, and go pick it up when it's done. And if I did it myself, I would have to listen to the Missus constantly ask me "do you know what you are doing??"
I think I'm doing it right, but you do you.

Changing oil is pretty easy to do yourself, but I still take the cars in because my time is valuable, and I also usually get the tires rotated and balanced.

I have been changing my own oil my whole life. I only paid to get a change maybe three times when I didn’t feel good

I'll trade convenience for peace of mind the job was done right. I've had a rental car spill its oil in a parking lot on Ft. Bragg because the grease monkey that did the last service probably used an impact gun and stripped the threads. Dealership service is no better, they don't pay those guys enough to give a shite more than getting your vehicle out of their bay as quickly as they can.

One of my vehicles is still under free maintenance for another 20K miles, and the other two I take to 5 min. One costs about $45 and the other about $55. It takes about 10-15 mins in and out and they air up my tires and check all other fluids. I don't have to lift a finger, I dont have to deal with hazmat, I don't have to order or buy supplies, and I don't have to buy any special equipment. Plus if they f something up, its on their dime.
So yea, thats worth the measly extra $20-25 or even $50. Also, you shouldn't grade your manhood or mechanical abilities based off of an oil change. Only a true soyboi would believe they are badass enough to post on the internet because they watched a youtube video,can unscrew a plug and open a bottle.

Get an oil extractor pump and you don't even need ramps if the filter is up top. That's how I changed it in the BMW.

I am able to change the oil and filter on both my vehicles w/out going under the vehicles. Super clean, takes 15 minutes and I use the Kirkland Dexos certified synthetic oil. With filter it costs me about $18 per vehicle.

Probably not. Most states require any place selling oil to take used oil for recycling.
So where I am, that means every auto shop, dealership, walmart, autozone, oreilly's, etc. has to take any used oil brought to them for recycling and it is free.

If somebody is charging you less than 30 for 5 quarts of synthetic and a decent oil filter, I would be very concerned.
I get those that do not change their own oil. I stopped as well but there are other benefits beyond saving a few bucks.
It is a good opportunity to look at your belts and hoses. It is belts and hoses that commonly leave you on the side of the road. You can also easily check your brake pads for wear.
Hear is a little secret about shops that do cheap oil changes. THEY WILL SCREW YOU ON OTHER WORK! They will tell you your brake pads are shot when they are not. They will tell you your air filter is clogged.
They know you are not willing or ignorant to change your own oil. They assume you have zero knowledge or desire to work on a vehicle. They know most people will not question a brake job.

Although I do just toss the filters in the garbage.
Used oil also keeps the weeds down.
