Faced with soaring Ds and Fs, schools are ditching the old way of grading

ERRRABODY GETS A TROPHY!!!
Not sure what a 46 year old man being killed has to do with grades in school.

These days, the Alhambra High School English teacher has done away with points entirely. He no longer gives students homework and gives them multiple opportunities to improve essays and classwork. The goal is to base grades on what students are learning, and remove behavior, deadlines and how much work they do from the equation.
The changes Moreno embraced are part of a growing trend in which educators are moving away from traditional point-driven grading systems, aiming to close large academic gaps among racial, ethnic and economic groups. The trend was accelerated by the pandemic and school closures that caused troubling increases in Ds and Fs across the country and by calls to examine the role of institutionalized racism in schools in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd by a police officer.

Los Angeles and San Diego Unified — the state’s two largest school districts, with some 660,000 students combined — have recently directed teachers to base academic grades on whether students have learned what was expected of them during a course — and not penalize them for behavior, work habits and missed deadlines. The policies encourage teachers to give students opportunities to revise essays or retake tests to show that they have met learning goals, rather than enforcing hard deadlines.

Grading homework is pointless, and if the goal is to educate, giving kids the opportunity to study more and retake assignments makes sense in that context.
It’s less about every kid getting a trophy and more about making sure we educate kids as much as we can while we have them as a captive audience.

In a lot of other countries, you need to be actually qualified to get a college degree. In the US, you have borderline illiterate people with graduate degrees.

I fail to see how George Floyd who struggled with fentanyl and pills somehow points to kids not being able to read 1,000 miles away
But whatever man , nothing makes sense in 2021
Also
This is horrifying for the future work force . Maybe they’ll hear the timer go off for the fries at McDonald’s in a timely fashion. We can only hope

I'd like to see side by side comparison of equal grade levels, public vs private.

And teach them accountability for their actions means nothing.

Blah blah blah.
Stop punishing actual achievers to placate dysfunctional's who don't value education.

If you can’t achieve your goals, make them up. Right?

Credentialism. It has ruined education in America.

I support this. Teachers are overworked as it is. It’s a 12 hour a day job and having to grade papers literally makes it a 24/7 job

And? This isn’t terrible. As adults, we all make mistakes in our professional and personal lives that we learn from. So long as their is a lesson being taught on responsibility as well, what’s the big hooha?

This happened in Seattle or San Diego recently. Instead of addressing the problem, how do we help kids that are struggling in school do better, they just want to hide the problem by getting rid of the key metric that showed how much they were struggling.

you can't really teach those lessons in school without grades

I agree and frankly, I would support this more at the k-8 levels as opposed to high school. But, as long as the level of education is mandatory, I think we should have a conversation about what our goals are in mandating it. Because if it’s to “train the workforce”, meh.
