re: Faced with soaring Ds and Fs, schools are ditching the old way of grading

This is the way my kid is graded
They give them E, R, S and Gs or some insane shite
The Principal tried to explain this to me and I told him it was as dumb as common core math

I think you can provide additional opportunities for that student outside of interrupting the time spent educating the others.
Sounds like your school day just got longer, and your free time will be overwhelmed with lesson plans.

Grading homework is pointless, and if the goal is to educate, giving kids the opportunity to study more and retake assignments makes sense in that context.
It’s less about every kid getting a trophy and more about making sure we educate kids as much as we can while we have them as a captive audience.
wow. that’s certainly one take.
How long have you been teaching Josh?
How many school aged children do you have?

True, the problem is that we’re not allowed to actually hold them to those expectations.
Because they’re kids.
So, you’re telling me that you were never held to any expectations until you were an adult?

I think a few ppl miss the point with the test and retest thing
My high school had test and retest for our math classes - but the two grades were averaged
So if you got a 20 the first time and then miraculously got a 100 the second time you received a 60. Test 1 was on Tuesday, test 2 on Thursday - so you either knew it or didn’t - better ask good questions on Wednesday
Now - I’m not saying that this is the plan the school districts are looking at - but that’s what we did and I tested out of 6 hours of math in college - so I would say I actually learned

I see it more like the alternative school in which I was a student observer.
Kids are given infinite time to get the required work done.
There was no learning going on.
At some point the kids are just being passed because they dont care, the administration is on your arse and you can't fail that many kids

Holy shite.
Failure is not a terrible thing. It is integral to life.
Do people really think it is beneficial to have children never experience failure?

My ap calc class was more difficult than the elective I took in college. I knew I would get an easy A

This is what is happening now - and has been for a while. It’s been a few years since I’ve been in a classroom but most of my teacher friends had quit before covid bc of the bs
Covid probably made the BS worse

What we should have is a standardized, non multiple choice test given at the beginning and end of all school years blindly graded by teachers the week before and the week after school.
Yes it’s more work for teachers. Yes it’s more work for students, but it’s probably the best way to gauge achievement.
I would be all for this, IF the students are somehow accountable, too. There were a few years in Louisiana that a student had to pass their LEAP test in 8th grade in order to be promoted to high school. If they didn’t score above unsatisfactory in the Spring, they had to attend summer remediation, then retake the LEAP test. I taught those summer remediation classes for math during the summer for three years. I loved going to work every day because those classes were the way school should be.
Behavior problem during remediation? You’re out, repeat 8th grade. Score unsatisfactory again? Repeat 8th grade. Do you know how many of those students had to repeat 8th grade over those three years? Zero. Little Johnny who couldn’t pass gas during the regular school year all of a sudden was scoring Basic or Mastery.
Care to know why that ended? Incessant complaining from parents.

In a classroom, you usually still have some kids that care. The reason they care? Accountability. I feel we are going backward here.

quote:At least at the college level, it's been this way for years. Everyone knows that if you show that you care about the class and take pains to meet with the professor etc. he WILL not fail you almost no matter what.
And I argue that the idea of basing whether or not a student had sufficiently learned the material off of a subjective determination made by the single individual whose job and advancement is determined by how well their students perform is so incomprehensibly stupid that I am actually saddened by the fact that I have to spell that out.
This idea that everything that has been working well for the previous 100+ years is somehow now wrong is insanity.

This kind of education would be easier to do without mainstreaming. That way you have more kids in a room roughly at the same pace.
If the classrooms were comprised of people with similar aptitudes and learning styles, the system would most likely improve overnight.
But nooo.... because Feelings.

Yep... ITs a glass bowl at times and you feel like no one is actually on your side. Good teachers are undervalued.
