It's intended to teach small children how to understand numbers and to do math in their head. They are taught the "standard" method later.

But the same idiots blathering on about Common Core can't manage to figure what something will cost at 35% off, or what a 15% tip is. Because sure, I can do 35% on paper, or I can do 10% in my head, multiply that number by 3 to get 30%, then take half of that original 10% number and add it on at the end to get 35%... which starts to sound a hell of a lot like what Common Core is trying to teach children to do...
What bold statement

I took a college class that was 100% effort based. If you did X amount of work up to 80% standard you got an A. If you did Y amount of work to 80% standard you got a B, Etc. etc. You literally had to DO NOTHING to fail.
It was kind of annoying since it was a stupid A&S course needed for some stupid reason for a Biology related degree and if I could have just got A's on what I did I could have skipped out on some tedious assignments and still got an A... but whatever. They sure don't grade advanced chemistry and biology courses like that...

how many kids do you have?
Zero, in both standard and common core math. Out of curiosity, what grade level do you think that assignment you posted was given to?

Danke.

No it doesn't. Not at all. It sums up the sentiment of the typical arrogant engineer completely missing the point of common core math.
The point of common core math is to MAKE the kids think about math that they wouldn't otherwise.
Why do you think common core math doesn't carry through high school when kids learn 'real' math? Because it's not meant to REPLACE how adults solve the worlds engineering problems.
It's simply a method to make elementary math foster critical thinking in children. God damn I can't believe people still don't get common core.
FWIW: I have 4 teenagers. 7th grade to Freshman at LSU. They survived it.

Then you should just step aside and let the parents handle this kid

That parent must have got his EE degree from a school like southern. It’s not hard at all

Why didn't you answer my question of what age group that assignment was targeted to?

Teaching common core as an alternative for people to do it a different way is one thing.
Trying to teach kids how to do those operations from scratch using common core tends to be frustrating as all hell because they have no fricking clue what they are doing or why.

It's time wasted and only a dumbarse would think its some incredible way to learn
I mean you have Josh defending it so that's all we needed to see
How would I know?

Apparently you wouldn't. Which makes it surprising that you have such a strong opinion regarding something you apparently know so little about.
But, I mean, you have kids, so you obviously know everything that might impact kids in any way, shape, or form. Silly me

3rd grade common core. What type of Ahole would say this is normal

That's the exact point I'm trying to convey. It's NOT normal. That's not how anyone does math in their head.
Common Core never set out to change how high school kids or adults do math. It was just trying to make our kids THINK harder and differently.

Sure, those numbers look trivial. But if I asked you to add or subtract large numbers in your head, would you mentally tick off carried numerals, or would you start massaging the numbers to make them easier to work with?
It's certainly what I do, and I was in law school before the concept of Common Core was invented. It's about math competency, not teaching how people should deal with numbers in ideal situations.

I'm not angered. It's stupid and so are the ppl who teach it. But please proceed with teaching it so I can lulz

And my tax money is paying for these cum buckets to produce these useless children

Our whole district has mandated Standard Referenced Grading and it’s the biggest cluster frick of bullshite that’s likely going to drive me from teaching all together before long. Thankfully they’re slowly installing it instead of jumping both feet in so I have time to get out before fricking with it.

The math method is not faulty, it’s the way it’s presented
If that is a true snippet that SDVTiger posted - then that is a horrible explanation given to kids as to why or how to do the math
Instead of explaining how/why to take the 4 from the 17 to add to the 26 to make 30 - and then to add the 13 left (to make 43) - it says ‘think 17=13+4’ - why would anyone automatically think that?
The wording is confusing - especially for a 3rd grader because why does the student have to think about the 17 first when taking the 4 from it to make a 30 with the 26?
