“This is literally taking the original 1999 version of EverQuest and reimagining it with new systems, new features, [and] new improvements,” EQL’s executive producer David “Sysyphus” Youssefi told me during a meeting at GDC 2026 earlier this month. Youssefi tells me that this is meant to not just remind players of the gameplay experience of OG EverQuest, but also look like it, as well.

“It’s not going to look like the EverQuest One that’s still active today, which has the upgraded graphics and twenty-five years of content, and is still designed for the sort of hardcore MMO player,” Youssefi continued. “This is going to look literally like the game that if you played it in 1999 you would have seen when you first logged in. At the same time, we’re modernizing it.”
