Retired fire baw, feathers aren’t ruffled just calling out when people make up stuff. What dept does your friend work for?

Wont give specific specific Dept location in Louisiana but spent many days hanging out with him working at the fire hall , fixing other people car's etc... He told me a few pretty horrific stories while on duty in his 20 plus years but for the most part most of what i said earlier is true. He is close to retirement and is set for life pretty much mid 50's. so happy for him / other firefighters that can do this but to say its a daily grid compared to other jobs is a bit much..

That’s the good side of it, you put in the years and you’ll retire well.

It all depends on the department but the ones typically that aren’t busy don’t pay well. For the most part your “make 2.calls a week” guys are probably on departments making $10 an hour with no benefits.

Firemen too

I swear our county spends 10x more on firefighting than the structures they "save". "Save" because of course they are a total loss anyway.

This isn't chicago, we aren't going to have a fire jump from building to building to building.

A single firehouse for the whole county would be sufficient...if not overkill.

Disagree, to an extent.

Good ones deserve raises. Plus higher pay will get better people (and, hopefully, more men) taking teaching jobs.

Get rid of the shite teachers and lazy lifers (tenured and don't care).

Lop off at least 50% of all administrative bloat (school and district level).

Kick shitheads that don't want to learn out of schools. Give them one shot at a alternative trade school and if they wash out, reserve them a cell at Angola (or a morgue slab).

100% of your pension =/= to 100% of salary and you know thats what he means. Name any proffesion currently which has a 100% pension.

Many ,many state and parish jobs will pay 100% pensions if you put the years in.
Corrections, 30 x 3.333 = 100

judges 28.60 x 3.5000 = 100

state employees / teachers 40 x 2.5= 100

legislative employees 28.60 x 3.500 = 100

I have no problem paying teachers, it is the bloated management/administrators that are sucking the system dry in any parish or state entity. Iam sure the feds are just as fricked as the locals.

It’s a tough job but I do agree with you about the time off. What other profession gets that much time off. You shouldn’t be paid six figures when you only work 9 months out of the year.

I do think public school teachers deserve more money to deal with the amount of bullshite they have to deal with.

They create some bullshite of their own, in many cases. If they would just teach instead of preach, I would be way more sympathetic.

If parents would do their jobs, teachers jobs wouldn’t be so difficult.

doesnt matter, within a decade when AI based teaching programs like The Alpha program are further along you are going to see the need for traditional teachers go down a ton

Controversial Opinion - Teachers don’t deserve pay raises

I don't think that is controversial at all. I think they are paid too much as it is.

People want teachers to be immune from supply and demand market forces.

My take on this is usually met with anger from the teachers crowd but if the job paid more, it would be more attractive and thus more competitive, so almost none of the people currently teaching would be teachers.

They really hate that.

I hate to say it but removing problem kids is a path of least resistance. You cannot fix their home life. Ibe always thought that a military school away from their families might help many. It isnt a perfect solution but structure and a better environment is necessary

I’m not going to say that isn’t happening with some teachers but I promise you it’s a much smaller percentage doing that than you’d think. Most of us just want to do our job and get home to our families.

The problem is, much like with cops, the "good" ones just watch it happen instead of actively calling it out and working against it.

Those freaks don't have to be a majority when they have the backing of administration and other teachers aren't publishing calling them out.

You have no idea what you’re talking about here. Teacher health care is absolute shite and is incredibly expensive.

A stereotype would be that it’s full of idiots with a GED that piss away money on truck nuts and beer. I know it’s false,

That's not false. That stereotype exists for good reason.

Teacher pay should be merit based, but that was tried.....the Unions did and will fight that to the death.

My SIL is a teacher in the EBR public school system and the number of unqualified or bad teachers is more than it's ever been. And there were a good bit when I was in the system in the 80's.
