Supply and demand of people wanting to be in a certain profession dictates pay. As long as mostly, not all, but mostly young girls go to school and want to be a teacher in high numbers, supply meets or exceeds demand, so providing higher pay is not warranted.

Also, they know the pay when they decided to be a teacher, but moan and groan about it after becoming a teacher. They many times choose the profession because of the stability of employment, lucrative medical benefits and retirement plans, not to mention all of the days off. Days off, including most of the summer, where they can do gig work for extra pay.

While I’m at it, Firemen too. Waiting lists to get hired, great benefits, most units only roll out to an actual fire of significance a few times a year. Cook, eat, BS with the guys, play video games, watch movies, work out and sleep, all while on the clock. Turn minor injuries into claims of disability and get paid to not go to work, retire after 20 years with full benefits and a significant percent of pay. Most have gig jobs and earn significant income on the side.

Don’t get me wrong, these professions are important, but they are not and should not be high paying jobs and they complain too much. If you don’t like your job’s pay, do something else.

Thank you for your attention to this matter…

I don't think they should be paid at all.

ETA: This is how you do a "controversial opinion".

I’m with ya. Nothing honorable or sacrificial about being a school teacher. It’s just a job.

^^ This right here, when I went back to school after working some seriously shitty jobs (retail, car sales and insurance sales) I for damn sure checked the earning potential for each respective field.

Teachers make on average 60k a year.

Total working days a year? 180. Total hours a day? 8

They work over 100 days LESS than anyone else and have a full pension with some of the best health care on the market.

Teachers are more than paid fairly, especially when you take into consideration that a kindergarten teacher makes the same as a teacher who teaches algebra to seniors.

Downvote away!

I get your point, but do disagree a bit in theory.

Do you think you deserve pay raises in your career? I mean, you knew what the salary was when you took the job as well.

Also, teachers could get fairly decent raises and still not be anywhere near “high paying” jobs.

I do think public school teachers deserve more money to deal with the amount of bullshite they have to deal with.

Looks like some teachers failed you…

But I’ll play…the economy has shifted a tad since I decided to become a teacher. I’m not bitching about low pay, but to think that a choice I made about 21 years ago will stay rock solid in an ever-changing world is silly, now that I look back. This logic suggests that anybody bitching about an AI takeover in their profession can shut it too.

I teach extracurricular subjects. My stipend pays approximately $19/hr. In total, I work about 2100 hours a year. Again, the profession and pay hasn’t grown accordingly.

Be careful what you wish for. Our societal values are upside down right now. You complain about teachers wanting more money, and we are in a world where women that can sort of dribble and shoot a basketball are millionaires. TikTok influencers rake in cash. I can confidently say I wish we could flip that a bit.

Teaching needs to be restructured. Good teachers are hard to find, and they still leave the profession in droves. If we valued the profession and made it more difficult to become a teacher, we probably end up with kids better equipped for the real world, and less women screwing young boys.

I taught for 12 years. I agree with teachers not needing a pay raise. And most of us would agree with this point. However, student behavior is significantly worse than at any point in history. And with all the fricking stupid policies to assure students are never dealt with, expelled, suspended, etc. it has created a workload on teachers that is not manageable. If you allow schools to throw out shitheads, then you'd be able to keep the cash flow the same. Instead, we evaluate schools on test scores and attendance leading to this problem and compounded with DEI coordinators who are there to assure that black kids are not suspended more than other races. When I was in Oxford, I wrote up one kid in eight years. He was black....while in the office, the school admin lowered the offense to avoid a suspension. Meanwhile, a white kid does the same and gets hit with the suspension every time, for equity. I was done at that point and never gave a frick again.

They spend more time with your kids than you do.

It should be a very high paying job. Extremely excellent teachers would be in schools if that were the case

Teachers overwhelmingly vote for the very things that prevent them from being paid more. But most teachers are too stupid to realize that.

They already are a high paying job. 60k a year for 180 days a year. You work around 280 days a year. Imagine if teachers actually worked that extra 100 days they would make close to 100k

I don’t think you know what this means. Teachers don’t retire with full pay. And it’s all over the place anyway depending on when you were hired/ state retirement system, etc.

Teaching is my second career. I was in the govt. contractor biz for a while. It’s about average.

I have no issues with my pay. If it were just me or if I were a single parent, it would be difficult. I do love the time off.

The only way to determine eligibility for an increase is testing of the students at the end of each year.

If they do well in the history portion of the testing, the history teacher did a good job, etc.

Make compensation merit-based and schools will improve.

As long as unions are getting blanket increases, there’s no individual incentive.

Not even 3% a year to keep up with inflation? That's cold.

Mom retired after 30 years with the school system. Pretty sure I have a great idea of how it works.

Both of my SILs are also in the school system. Ones a vice principal and the other is a teachers aide.

Their healthcare is better than the vast majority of those who work in the private sector.

Also true.

The blanket statements tossed around by those about the teaching profession are interesting to say the least. It’s apparent that random posters on here know more about the job than I do, despite my years of experience. I’m still waiting for my 3 months off and annual pay raises.

Maybe I’m too honest, but I’m not going to spew BS about oil and gas workers if I don’t know anything about it. A stereotype would be that it’s full of idiots with a GED that piss away money on truck nuts and beer. I know it’s false, and there are some smart dudes calling the shots in that line of work. The OT’s fascination with teachers and nurses needs to be studied.
