This why Teachers unions began. Protect the average and below average teachers to the detriment of the good ones. General Supply and demand rules don’t work with union labor.

In many areas they are underpaid if you look at what bloated admin staff make, who have no impact on students.
Does my kid's junior high need 6 vice principals? I'm sure they don't.
But, the explosion of TAs (and their admin "support") due to SPED students being so heavily represented in mainstream classes impacts admin costs to a greater degree. You don't just need (as a condition of federal aid) 2 TAs in a classroom with five SPED kids, you also need an extra SPED coordinator for every 15 SPED kids, you need an additional nurse with SPED certifications in earmuff application, etc.
School districts blindly take every dollar FedGov offers, without ever seemingly considering the additional costs that are incurred.

I don’t get the teacher worship. Yes they are important. Yes they teach our children (allegedly) but some are in the same tax bracket as a pediatrician, police, fire,….ALL are important to my kids’ well being
The garbage men do an important job, so do water sanitation services. They don’t get an appreciation day.
Further, my career requires a (5 year) Masters degree to be certified. It’s a rigorous exam, a rigorous degree. I worked 70 hour weeks 9 months out of the year, including weekends. Generally my job attracts very intelligent people.. If calculated on an hourly basis I earned far less than a teacher for the first 8 years of my career. Nobody worships the corporate auditors.
I think teachers have benefited from unions and a massive PR campaign to train the public into thinking teachers are magical. Frankly most I’ve encountered are tepid at best

$40k per year.
Theres not a public school teacher who makes less than 45k unless they work in some shitehole parish or uncertified.
BTW, St Charles starts at 60k.

I think teachers and police should be held to extremely high standards and then paid mountains of cash.

SIAP-
If your school district wants the best teachers, you have to pay more than the neighboring school district. Or if you are in a really shitty school district, you need to pay more so teachers are willing to work there with all the bullshite they have to deal with in a shitty district.

For the actual work performed, they are overpaid. They also call it a profession despite not having to answer to any of the standards that accompany actual professions.

While I’m at it, Firemen too. Waiting lists to get hired, great benefits, most units only roll out to an actual fire of significance a few times a year. Cook, eat, BS with the guys, play video games, watch movies, work out and sleep, all while on the clock. Turn minor injuries into claims of disability and get paid to not go to work, retire after 20 years with full benefits and a significant percent of pay. Most have gig jobs and earn significant income on the side.
Don’t get me wrong, these professions are important, but they are not and should not be high paying jobs and they complain too much. If you don’t like your job’s pay, do something else.
Thank you for your attention to this matter…
I've never been a fireman, but they fell under my purview in the military. The laziest, whiniest group I've ever seen.

Retirement is good, but nobody wants 60-year-old firefighters responding to them. Health insurance went to shite after Obamacare. Fire depends on the dept, mine ran lots of fires, plus car wrecks, plus ran the ambulance service. Most departments run EMS.

Most days are spent training, cleaning, checking trucks, meetings, running calls, preplanning, and inventory. In the evenings, you could watch TV, play games.

Never saw this in 31 years, not saying it didn't happen, but not common. Don't know of any departments where you can get full benefits at 20 years, either.

No, most don't, but a few do. I get everyone on this site who knows a fireman who was making $500k after one year and only responded to one grass fire, but it's important for regular people to realize that none of that is true and is mostly made-up BS by people on social media. Same with people on teachers, I probably know at least a dozen teachers, and none I never hear complain irl or see them complain on social media.

No, and yes that was my point. Way too much high pay admin and not enough classroom people.

You do know there is a teachers shortage everywhere right?
Posted on 5/2/26 at 5:22 pm to Skippy1013
I always get a kick out of the teachers complaining about only getting paid 9 months out of the year. No honey, you get your full salary over 9 months. It's no one's fault but your own that you can't manage your finances.

I coulda sworn you started a thread a few years back wanting to change professions and asking for advice. But maybe it was someone else.

Almost ten years ago I was laying in the floor of an empty townhouse with no real job prospects begging the Money Board to help me fix my fricked up decisions.
Now I’m making almost 6 figures working the easiest job on the planet according to the OT.

Enjoy the scenery and live in the moment. Why would you spend time at the beach staring at the screen and bitching about teachers?

I always go back and forth on this topic.
I’m a teacher and for years regretted going that route. I wanted to coach football and got my foot in the door with college, but ultimately went back to high school for the stability and being there for my family (and got life saving advice from some good people).
Now that I’m a veteran teacher, I’m thankful for the pension and healthcare. I look forward to my job on most days, and I only get frustrated with pay occasionally…mostly due to rising costs of everything else in this country (but everyone deals with it).
I still coach football, which does lead to extreme hours in-season for very little pay…but as my wife says, no one makes me do it. I still squeeze in side jobs when I can to help us afford some extra stuff, but my family is very happy with our middle class life.
Most teachers just don’t take full advantage of the flexibility in their hours or don’t quite realize how much money they’ll have on the back end if they reach full retirement.

Good teachers deserve great pay. But “Educators” are often less than worthless. Agenda driven programmed robots.

I wish they could see what Instrument Technicians face. In addition to possessing dynamic troubleshooting repertoire, the technology changes almost daily and has done so for the last 50 years.
2+2=4 hasn't changed since ever.

High teacher pay rarely means good students

Do you have kids saying “frick you” to your face? Do you deal with shite parents on the reg?
Every career has pros and cons.
