Multiple bears may have been involved in fatal attack, Canadian authorities say

quote:

British Columbia officials investigating a bear attack that left a mother and daughter dead in Bella Coola said that it is possible more than one grizzly was involved and that they are carrying out “highly dangerous work” to try to capture and assess local bears.

“We do not know if more than one bear may have been involved in the attack,” Inspector Jeff Tyre, of the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service, said during a news conference Wednesday. “Numerous” grizzly bears live in the valley, he added.

The victims — identified as Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and Selah Reed, 20 — were reported missing Sunday. The first body was found on Monday; the second was discovered Tuesday.

Last year, a grizzly attacked a school group in Bella Coola, hospitalizing three students and a teacher.

Tyre said it was too early to establish how the attack unfolded and difficult to determine whether issues such as food shortages could have influenced bear behavior in the valley.

They had to search a bit to find what was left of the daughter. This is the most dangerous time of year for encountering a bear, especially a Grizzly.

Were they on their cycle? I hear the bears can smell the menstruation.

That’s terrible. What a horrible way to go. But, This is what happens when we try to live side by side with massive apex predators.

May have to consult Oura corporate to pull their data. They aren't exactly going to be able to tell that info. Plus I am not sure how much of their uterus is left for autopsy.

I used to live on the edge of national forest in California and black bears would always be on our front porch when we’d come home at night. They are pretty timid and would always scatter when the lights hit them.

Grizzlies are a totally different situation. They are menacing.

Spring and Fall are the worst times to come across them, too. Not terribly much in Summer unless you scare one or find a mama bear.

I've seen more than a few Brown Bears fishing in a Alaska and they'll put the fear of god in you.

There are a lot of shitty ways to die. And being mauled/eaten by a bear is up on the list.

Friend,

Years ago I was attacked by a young grizzly near Glacier NP while on a backpacking journey. Although we successfully fought it off with minimal damage to body, I have since had a strong hatred for grizzly bears. Many letters have been mailed to lawmakers and NPS leaders, especially in Washington and California where there is an insane movement to reintroduce grizzly bears to these areas.

Since that attack, I have been stalked by a large grizzly in Montana. I used spray on her and she ran away, by the grace of God.

Grizzly bears are horrible and menaces to humans. There is ample reason that our wise forefathers sought to eradicate them from our landscape. The bear lovers out there defend these killer bears and blame the attacks on human behavior. They are misanthropes and the truth is not in them.

Tragedies like this one are becoming more common and eventually the pendulum will swing. Until that time I will continue writing letters.

Yours,
TulaneLSU
