There are really three types of brown bear attacks: a threatened bear, a hungry bear, or an injured bear.
In the case if the threatened bear, that almost always comes with cub defending. They take that shite seriously. The big hump of muscle on their necks/backs is an evolutionary development from all their time as a species spent digging for food. There is a lot of power it it, and once they have a threat on the ground they use that power to stomp on the threat until they are convinced it is no longer a threat. That's 500+ pounds driving it's weight directly into the soft, squishy body of an unfortunate human. That's why they say to "play dead". If you have any luck at all the bear will buy it and think you're no longer a threat.
If that bear is hungry, well......the playing dead bit won't matter. Treadwell was in a known bear area during the worst time of a year that had been a tough one for food sources. Those bears were stressed, especially the "new bear" that showed up, due to a general shortage of food and time for feeding was running out. He regularly put himself in a dangerous situation as a foolish practice, but the decision to extend his stay was the dumbest choice he ever made. He could have just chilled in town and waited for his plane to show, but chose instead to head back out to bear country. He either ignored or didnt realize the differences in the situation. He put himself and his girlfriend in the absolute worst scenario, an end of season that had stressed, hungry bears doing everything they could to fuel up for Winter hibernation.

wasn't that what that loon Tim Treadwell would say to the bears when he got ridiculously close to them?
That didn't work out for him either.

Grizzly attacks are so incredibly rare, and aren't close to reaching "menace" status. Humans are and have been much, much worse menaces to Grizzlies, I assure you.

Friend,
Years ago I was attacked by a young grizzly near Glacier NP while on a backpacking journey. Although we successfully fought it off with minimal damage to body, I have since had a strong hatred for grizzly bears. Many letters have been mailed to lawmakers and NPS leaders, especially in Washington and California where there is an insane movement to reintroduce grizzly bears to these areas.
Since that attack, I have been stalked by a large grizzly in Montana. I used spray on her and she ran away, by the grace of God.
Grizzly bears are horrible and menaces to humans. There is ample reason that our wise forefathers sought to eradicate them from our landscape. The bear lovers out there defend these killer bears and blame the attacks on human behavior. They are misanthropes and the truth is not in them.
Tragedies like this one are becoming more common and eventually the pendulum will swing. Until that time I will continue writing letters.
Yours,
TulaneLSU
