LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has been using one of the most memorable victories in program history to help motivate his team ahead of Saturday's showdown against Alabama.
During his weekly radio show Thursday night, Kiffin revealed that LSU's historic 9-6 overtime victory over Alabama in 2011, famously dubbed the "Game of the Century," has been playing on television monitors throughout the football operations building this week.
Kiffin explained that the coaching staff regularly features highlights from past games to help players prepare for upcoming opponents.
"I always like to play great games to get guys in the mode of who they're playing," Kiffin said. "Whether it's games they played earlier in the season or that one."
Kiffin also pointed out something unique about the historic defensive battle, which LSU won without either team scoring a touchdown.
"I think the unique thing about that game is that we played it all day long," Kiffin said. "As you walk out of the office, you go down to the defense or the offense, you see it all day long."
"And the really interesting thing is, after a day of playing the game all day long, there still is not a touchdown," Kiffin continued. "So it's a very unusual game that you can put on that way the whole day and remind people to play great defense and to play physical in this matchup."
LSU defeated Alabama 9-6 in overtime on November 5, 2011, in Tuscaloosa, with Drew Alleman kicking the game-winning 25-yard field goal.
Now, 15 years later, Kiffin hopes his Tigers can bring that same defensive intensity into Saturday's rivalry matchup.
Kickoff from Tiger Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
