Good point.

How does this warrant a private evac? People are so damn soft and dramatic these days. I get that it hurt like hell, but I have 0 doubts she could have ubered to the airport and then flown home commercial.

Have to do what you can to get someone else to pay your medical bills. And, it does appear to be working. Saw the story last night and she was just over $6k towards a $10k goal. Now they’ve exceeded that goal and raised it

Looking back, we were probably a little lax on the lack of safety standards when we rode a rickety bus around a dirt road up a mountain that had no guide rails to get to the start of the zip line. Otherwise, it was pretty fun.

Dude, that's the standard mode of transportation for excursions in the Caribbean or central/south America. Wife and I went to Antigua for out honeymoon, and went ziplining through Sandals. Same bus situation, narrow arse roads, very large dropoffs, and a very excited bus driver. It was more thrilling than the canopy top zipline.

Haven't cruised to some of these countries, but the best bet would be to book excursions with the cruise line.

Just saw the video. They blamed the accident on the way the retrieval line was hooked up but looks like it was an unmanned rope swing. She just chose to go about it with the line between her legs, where most people would know to have it to the side.

quote:

Kirsten initially believed the injury was only a scratch and returned to the dock. However, hours later, her condition deteriorated rapidly as swelling and pain became increasingly severe. It wasn’t long before the injury swelled to the size of a baseball.

Why would you wait hours to have an injury to the genital area looked at when you were swimming in the water shortly after the incident?

From what I read, she would go spurts in the hospital on the cruise where she would fall asleep and stop breathing.

That looks like Little French Key. A private island you get to by taking a small ferry. You pay per day to visit. There is a bar on the island, and a they serve food. There is a zoo that you walk through when you arrive.

You can snorkel, ride horses in the surf, paddle board, lay on the beach, etc.

To be fair, what kind of moron jumps off a platform rope swing with the retrieval rope between their legs. Stupid on her part, but someone should have been posted there watching out for stupidity.

I went there twice. Nice enough place but they are pretty sketchy.

They charged us twice for our day on the beach the second time we went. They said the website was “hacked” and wouldn’t honor our tickets.

If we weren’t on the opposite side of Roatan from our ship that day, and would have to pay for a taxi to get back we would have left.
We would never go back after that experience.

I have a friend who owns a dive shop on Utila and he says the guy who owns Little French Key has a terrible reputation.

As much as you can beat one of them things up and it bounces right back, it's hard to believe a rope could hurt it.

I went down a ridiculously tall water slide once on a Caribbean island these cruise ships use to have all-day excursions, and all I could think about was how OSHA was likely not required to inspect. And any other lukewarm, half assed inspections were likely done by third-world retards.

The US must really be broke, the amount of propaganda trying to scare people from spending USD in foreign countries is off the charts

Crazy enough, that’s the second time I’ve heard of something similar happening on a Costa Rican zip line. The one I heard about a few years ago was an older lady.

Was just there and I read enough negative stuff about this place on Facebook and other forums that we stayed away from it. Glad we did. Saw a video of them throwing a jaguar in the water so the cruise crowd could hold it and take pics, along with a "dolphin encounter". Unethical tourist trap that does not have a good rep with anyone in the area.

Her air evacuation costs less than the air rescue of the fat chick that couldn’t walk 2 miles on a mountain trail?

I assume it's because they had to fly her back to the US via a private jet.

Nah, it took 3 helicopters working together to lift her and then a jumbo jet to fly her back.
