I don't get it. We've known gambling is bad for decades. Why are cigarettes ads illegal but gambling is shoved in our face??

Depends.
I usually do a parlay $10 or $20 to give myself something to watch on the weekends.
This past weekend I hit a 3 team MLB parlay to win $85. Cashed out $75 and left $30 in to play with.
During football season will usually do 3-4 parlays for $5 each.

And it's not just influencing those who could bet, but exposing and desensitizing adolescents as well, long before they are of age to place their first "free" bet.

I'm thankful I don't find it that thrilling. I don't really get the impulse these degenerates apparently have.
I do like throwing a few dollars on something on a slow sports day just to have something to pay attention to in the background, though. A little tougher since the foreclosure, but I still find time.

Robinhood even allows futures trading on sports now further confusing the gullible into thinking it's investing adjacent. I gladly take their incentives but that really makes me dislike the platform.
I know a young relative that sports gambles what he says is small sums for entertainment but won't start a Roth despite years of offering to match his contributions. I think he provably took a 401k loan to pay down a higher interest car loan despite advice to contrary.
This generation is cooking themselves.

I’m glad in my college days the big thing was poker.
A lot of people took it too far, but there was only so much damage you could do in a weekly cash game.
Now universities advertise casinos and online betting in their stadiums. Add in a smart phone. It’s a bad combination.
