On physical media, the extended versions split each movie into two parts.
That could be a good way to watch with the kids since it gives you a good opportunity to take a break. The cutoffs for disc 1 happen at appropriate moments in the story, and it makes it feel a bit like the end of a mini-series episode or the intermission of a classic epic film.
