nah, it's gonna almost have to be a video game legend.

so either Bo Jackson or Randy Moss.

Depends on how many generations of fans were surveyed.

My guess one of the following would win:

Montana
Rice
Emmit Smith
Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
Gale Sayers
Namath
Unitis
Butkus
Bradshaw
Franco Harris
Swann
Staubach

Don't see Brady in that role.

Did people outside of NE really like Tom Brady? As a player, was he this loveable and extremely interesting dude?

I agree with this. There is no question about his greatness at QB. But this is popular, not best. He's not likeable outside of his team's fans.

and you’d be very wrong. All of those players you listed are so old that I hardly know who some of them are and there wasn’t international media then that there is today.

If the only criteria for the question is most popular ever, then we’re assuming we’re polling all people worldwide of all ages, so it’s Tom Brady easily.

It says "most popular" not most "well known."

Charles Manson was well known too. Charles Lindbergh was popular.

They're not synonyms.

We talking about just during their playing careers or during and after?

If during and after, then I think you’ve got folks like:

John Madden

OJ Simpson: Naked Gun, Hertz then white Bronco and murder trial

Michael Strahan: He now has millions of housewives watching him every weekday morning

Merrill Olsen: Hall of Fame D-Lineman then star on Little House on the Prairie

At his peak, Captain America was probably the most popular plyer ever.
Only QB to win the Heisman and be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and did with America's Teams.

Never said I would be right.

Which is why I started my list with "depending on who was surveyed and what generation of football they watched".

Us older folks (Gen Xers and Boomers) recognize that you younger folks think the world revolves around you. Your statement above confirms that.

I would agree with this as well if the poll involves "worldwide" since billions outside the US only know a few players. If you only polled the most recent generation, then Brady should win by a landslide.

Based on instagram followers, OBJ is up there he has 17.6 million and it’s pretty rare for a football player to have that many considering it’s not a worldwide sport like basketball

People all over the world recognize Tom Brady. If not for his football career, then for being married to Gisele, one of the most famous people on earth.
