Probably Namath. It's much later now but he was the most popular in his time. Much more than Sanders

Brady is the clear answer now. What would the answer have been in 2005? Namath?

OJ Simpson was in the conversation until one night in Brentwood.

This.
Those who weren’t around maybe see the old footage sometimes but will never be able to fully grasp how huge Broadway Joe was on the cultural scene back in those days.
Joe was arguably the first true mega celebrity/ athlete of the television age.

Tom Brady and it’s not even remotely close.
This “not even close” shite is so dumb Manning, Brady’s closest contemporary, may have had more broad reaching popularity due to his television appearances

Namath dominated. Just look at old newspapers back then. There were groupies. He was playing in New York City, the biggest venue. Hype hype hype.

Kapernick. Has been out of football for longer than he was in the NFL, and there are still multiple stories/articles about him every year. Talking heads talk about him after every injury.
This is also assuming popular =/= liked

It changes like anything else. At one point in time it was Montana. Then it was Bo Jackson. Then it was Deion. Then Farve and Elway. Then TB took it over for a good while and still has that title. In a few years it will be Mahomes, then someone else

Peyton Manning has SNL, his show, the family name as well
I’d say it’s extremely close if not Manning being more popular
Honestly, stupid arse Odell is up there as well

Does most popular mean most well liked/viewed positively then it’s easy Peyton Manning
If most popular means most talked about/well known etc I think Brady has it.
