We’ve spent the last 25 years developing a military designed to fight terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile weaponized drone technology was being developed by other countries. It’s cheap and effective. We may be a little behind in this specific area

Why would you put yourself in harms way when it is not necessary? The strait is open for business and long term will not be needed. Iran is basically without any military infrastructure other than a few drones. Their economy has collapsed. The sanctions just employed will just completely cause them to roll over. They have no choice. I hate it for the decent citizens of Iran but it had to happen. Extermination of the Mecca terror of the world is a good thing.

Iran does not "control" the strait, I agree.
They absolutely can and do contest access for merchant shipping and we lack the drone, missile and mine defense capacity to eliminate that threat currently with the result being that mega expensive tankers cant transit the area due to insurance risk issues.
Unfortunately for us the impact to global energy markets is the same other than our ability to prevent their oil from transiting either.

Here is another nice nugget of info. The Lloyd’s of London have insured mega tankers since their inception. They have made trillions doing it. When this Iran thing happened the Lloyd’s cancelled insurance for those companies/tankers going through the soh. The us is now covering the insurance which will neuter another corrupt institution within the UK. This is a win in more than one game.

We are not behind in the technology by any means. We have not mass produced them as they were not needed. That has changed and is being ramped up as we speak.

You mean when Japan had the strongest navy in the planet compared to now when Iran has no navy or Air Force while we have the most powerful military in the world.

How in the hell do you think that you know how much oil is getting through the strait? Every report that I've seen lists Reuters as the info source, and Reuters plainly says that they use the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for their reports.
Now I don't know about you, but if I was about to run a lengthy gauntlet where there was a good chance that someone would be shooting missiles at me, I wouldn't be broadcasting my exact location to everyone on the planet. Reuters doesn't have a clue how much oil is getting through.
All we really know is what ships have reported being shot at and/or damaged, and to this date I have not heard of a single vessel being sunk or a single gallon of oil being lost to an attack.
