Lane Kiffin Explains Defensive Breakdown On Kentucky's Game-Winning Two-Point Conversion

USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin addressed Kentucky's game-winning two-point conversion on Sunday, revealing that a defensive miscommunication played a role in the Tigers' overtime loss in Lexington.
Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey scored on a two-point conversion to seal the Wildcats' victory Saturday night, but Kiffin explained that the play was actually designed as a pass before Minchey took off running.
"They really had a pass play on, like you said, and the quarterback took off and ran. Actually, not a draw. The line's not moving downfield at any point," Kiffin said.
Kiffin acknowledged that defensive coordinator Blake Baker would probably like to have the call back, but also pointed to a missed adjustment by LSU's defense.
"Not the best call, but you know what? Hey, Blake's made a lot of great calls this year. We've played great on defense for a majority of the year," Kiffin said.
"There is a thing that's supposed to happen when they go to empty with the rush where we communicate and the rush changes, and someone got the call and one didn't get the call.
"So there was more to it than just the base call. There was an adjustment that didn't get done that changes how they rush because of the ability for the quarterback to run vertically."
LSU will look to get back on track this upcoming Saturday vs. No. 16 Mississippi State at Tiger Stadium.
