I have a huge problem with them dying. More than most probably. But we’re in a war and soldiers die in wars.

The problem isn't a matter of can or can't. We could control the Strait, but it would require weapons that are "off the table" due to the Geneva Convention.
In this age of modern warfare we are like the English marching around waiting for a gentlemanly conflict that never comes.
We need to take the gloves off and fight dirty. We should be dropping nerve gas all over that island/peninsula.
