The State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services received a letter from the United States Department of Agriculture earlier this month stating it will no longer receive funding for the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program. The nonprofit Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is one of seven food banks that receives funding through federal programs like this one. “Our portion of that would have been $2 million,” said Amy Beros, the nonprofit’s CEO. “But statewide, it's an $11 million impact for the food banks across North Carolina. She said the $2 million in federal funds the nonprofit would have received would go directly to farmers for the purchase of fresh food that’s then distributed across the 34 counties they serve. Beros told WUNC there needs to be a call to action. “Please reconsider this program,” she said. “These are our farmers. These are neighbors across our counties that are in need, and this is going to be a huge impact economically.” Moving forward, the organization is looking for possible state funds to help mitigate the loss. In the 34 counties that the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina serves, Beros said hunger has been steadily increasing in recent years.

Good. It’s not the job of the federal government to fund local food banks.

On the face of it, this looks bad....but
These are exactly the type of programs that get used to funnel $$ to "friends" of the grift machine.
Was there a bidding process for the farmers? Were DEI a or BIPOC qualities required for the contract? How much administrative cost was there and who was getting it?
The media/left love these programs because it is easy to shame people into not seeing any problems with giving certain parties taxpayer dollars. They won't ask/answer the above questions when hitting the airwaves.
A second order of effect is that this may be a legitimate program with no grift, but it gets used as cover for all of the other programs that they don't report on. These organizations just can't/won't tell you the truth of the matter either way.

I’d rather food banks in NC than the laundering front in the Ukraine or illegals in CA or NY.

There are already food assistance programs such as snap.

People need to work to earn. If not. Use their welfare for food.

But this is duplicative and give always become stolen money.

What does it matter if it's Ukraine or North Carolina when it ends up in dirty politicians pockets, it all goes to the same place. I prefer the government to not launder money at all I don't care where it's at

Good. If you ever get laid off, they should keep your unemployment checks and give them to the company who laid you off. I'm glad you agree with that.

Where’s my funding for fresh food? Why does she feel so entitled? I should get the $2M.

This is the most American thing posted today. If I can’t have it without even trying to get it, NO ONE CAN HAVE IT!

Have you ever tried to obtain funding for fresh food? Did you expect it to fall in your lap?

Food banks should be faith based organizations and I bet they pick up the slack when these funds are slashed. Anything the government does like this cost multiples of what it should cost. Faith based are volunteers. Government run programs are employees and spend as much as they can get away with.

You want to cut back on benefits that our aging population paid into all of their lives. When you have put 1/10 of what was taken from me, you have the right to have an opinion on the subject matter. Until then, continue playing Warcraft and living in your mom’s basement. Get a job, and contribute, rather than being a leech on others.

Have a nice day.

On the fraudulent social security disability side, sure. The retirement side was funded with money forcibly taken from everyone's paycheck.

They love to slap a charitable label on the crony grift and also set their wives up to run non profits tied to it.

Every single thing the government pays for is funded the same way. What makes SS special?

Oh because it’s supppsed to benefit regular people? And that’s different from food banks how?

Because you pay specifically for it to the tune of 6% on your first $168,000 of income. Your employer pays the other 6%.
