That's certainly not the typical home-schooler but some small degree of oversight is warranted,

None of that oversight should come from a system that has ably demonstrated it cannot educate kids.

If a family wanted to homeschool their child but never actually teach the child anything, is there any oversight to make sure this doesn't happen?

If the school doesn’t teach the child anything, is there any oversight to prevent that from happening?

Problem isn’t kids not learning IMHO. It is that smart kids aren’t buoying the school system which is failing.

School systems want to blame kids having alternatives for their own failures.

Can you imagine what a great state Illinois could be with a great governor and mayor of Chicago, those two losers are so stupid they couldn’t provide a combined IQ in the normal range, but they do know their way around a buffet.

n Illinois, homeschooled children generally perform at a high level academically, scoring at the 81st to 87th percentile across subjects like reading, language, math, science, and social studies, which is significantly above the U.S. public school average.

Yep. Democrats are pissed that they can't keep them all stupid and indoctrinated.

God forbid they should learn to read and right instead of being groomed and illiterate.

I seriously doubt homeschoolers are the problem.

Homeschoolers are definitely the problem. Those kids are learning things that the establishment doesn't want them to know.

Exactly.

If we are going to establish oversight, shouldn't we first do it upon the system whose sole reason for existing is education?

Imagine be so terrible at your job you have to jail the competition.

Is stunning how little the school “system” has become a jobs program for leftists. No one in the “system” gives a crap about the students.

No thanks, we don’t need these people coming down here to muddy up our situation any.

As in Michigan, there are a lot of people in Illinois that are very solid, but the inner city teachers unions control Chicago and thus just about anything else in the state. There are plenty of decent people outside this circle jerk of misfortune and they are moving out fast.

This is what Chicago voted for, I feel bad for the rest of the state.

This is what I was thinking.

Home school minded parents are already fed up with the education system. More than likely they didn't vote for the current leadership of Illinois.

That being said, they need to leave ASAP

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Chicago was safer when Capone ran it.

Wow I understand your question let's face it. There are school districts All Over America handing people diplomas who can't read. Several years ago there was a school in Birmingham where the valedictorian on her third try couldn't break 800 on the SAT. The valedictorian! And nobody involved in any that shits going to jail so maybe they should lay off the homeschoolers

Exactly.

The first people on the oversight list should be the ones claiming to be the experts and are actually getting paid by taxpayer dollars to do that job.

How about they amend the bill to jail public school administrators who are taking tax dollars and producing failing students.

The timing of this makes it feel like an attempt by Democrats to push back against Trump's elimination of the Department of Education.

Not saying it isn't a partial reaction to Trump, but this bill has been in the works for a bit. Awake Illinois and other IL conservative organizations have been trying to warn people about it for weeks, and have been organizing protests in Springfield.

Unfortunately, the unions own Dem politicians at all levels. The IL House Speaker, like Brandon Johnson, is another failed educator whose sole agenda is to protect the interests of the teachers unions. He killed an existing school-choice program for poor families in 2023. This homeschool bill is just another tool for the unions to consolidate power.
