For those who missed the Carter years...
go to Venezuela now

I remember all kinds of shortages. Toilet paper was one. But the weirdest was onions. Couldn't get onion rings at Murrell's for two weeks.

Also remember the black flags at gas stations off the interstate meaning...'don't pull off the highway because we ain't got no gas.'

Ah, life under liberalism. Ain't it grand?

Zach, I think one of the great ironies of the 21st century is that Carter builds houses for a legacy.

Funny when a government says it will provide for all ends up providing for none.

Thank you for jogging a memory. I remember him telling us to put the thermostat on 60 in the winter and wear a coat inside my house.

Don't recall a shortage of toilet paper or onions but I recall long lines and closed stations under Nixon and Carter. Nixon also brought us federal price limits on goods like milk.

Ford's answer to inflation was to pass out WIN buttons. Whip Inflation Now!

Oh for the years of Republican presidents

See that's the thing with you folks and your selective memory. Democrats: Maxist Communist Republicans: Freedom lovers. And you bring up Carter but if I bring up Nixon and Ford, who totally screwed up the economy for Carter, I'm deflecting.

Actually Nixon put a freeze on wages and prices in 1971. Worked great.

As did Ford's idea:

I would LOVE to see this board if Obama did either of these things.

Nixon's freezes on wages and prices were a disaster. He conceded as much in his memoirs. You'd be hard pressed to find conservatives who disagree.

I don't recall any gas shortages under Nixon.

Nixon was not a conservative. Wage/price controls are a leftist concept. See the link in the OP.

That was the first oil embargo.

Under your definition, there hasn't been a conservative president since Hoover.

And we see how that turned out.

Are you kidding? Hoover wasn't a conservative. He MASSIVELY ramped up government spending in the wake of the stock market crash, called for wage freezes which helped drive up the unemployment rate, and basically laid the groundwork for FDR's New Deal. This notion that Hoover was some laissez-faire capitalist is absurd.

The shortage under Nixon was caused by the Yom Kippur war, that under Carter I can't remember the cause but it was by far longer, and it was that along with other things that led to malaise. Malaise is political short hand for "we're fricked".

re: For those who missed the Carter years...
Thanks for the link. I was confusing oil shortage with car purchase under Carter.

Carter did a boycott of foreign made cars. I wanted a Honda Civic. Went into the dealership and there were no cars in the show room.

Guy pulled up a metal chair and opened a drawer.

Dealer: There is a Honda Civic coming over on a ship from Japan in two weeks. This is the price. You can take it or leave it. The price is controlled by the govt and imports are controlled by the govt.

Me: I'll take it.

I don't remember Hoover. I only go back to Ike. But I've read some goof stuff about Hoover.

The wage freeze was one of the top 5 dumbest economic things every perpetrated on our nation.

There. I said it and I've ALWAYS said it. Oh, and it was a damned liberal thing to do.
