From the article, it sounds like the NG just paid for college, he did the rest.

In the real Army, you're required to be a swinger.

Might I add you should stay in the NG or Army Reserve forEVER and retire. So you and your spouse get the Tri-Care for life.

Just stay long enough to find a way to get full disability. Medical for life.

Correct. He potentially risked his life and freedom for it.

I debated some moron chick at LSU a decade ago who was speaking on how college in America should be free like it is in European countries.

How these morons equate the population of a single European country compared to the entirety of the United States should void the pension of their grade school teachers alone .

You want free college? There’s no such thing as a free lunch. The G.I. Bill is right there, and you don’t have to always see combat. You would have on the job experience when starting college. The world is literally your oyster to drop from there.

The Greatest Generation should’ve left more grit in society when they ran the country.

Yeah living like you’re 40 when you’re 20 is an awful way to go through life. Making money is easy. No need to waste your youth doing it.

That recruiter's office is open to everyone.

No it’s not. It’s only open for those without a felony, disabled, anyone who never took adderall or any other “mental medication.” We aren’t at war right now.

It's all fun and games until the democrats drag un into another war in the middle east, then they ship all these kids over to help build stuff.

Eh, I’d put it more like this:

The benefits package is pretty plush considering the demands (though going through basic and AIT kind of sucks for most of these kids) of most of these positions over the course of their terms of service.

However, with the Guard and Reserves, you are effectively undertaking a speculative enterprise, risking that your service won’t be needed in a combat theater during your term of service. Most - if not the vast majority of - of the time that’s probably true. However, you can also find yourself in 2006 where everyone is getting stopped lossed and NG and Reserve units are being to used to plug holes for an overstretched Active force, and you’re an E-4 on his cumulative 23rd month in some shithole southwest of Baghdad, and 20X that amount of money won’t make you stay for a single month longer than you absolutely have to.

In that sense the appearance of over-compensation is really just the incremental compensation for the additional risk you’ve assumed given the likelihood of such a scenario.

I laughed, but it’s true child support for that stripper’s kid would eat into that $100k of savings with quickness. Not to mention the full sleeve tats.

I wont argue against that. We don’t need weak links in the military. I was just saying that when vets preach the saying “the recruiter office was open for anyone,” it’s really not. Your sacrifice earned your benefits, enjoy them, just don’t be a douche to everyone who didn’t also enlist.

So how did the Democrats drag us into wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? I might have missed your reasoning.
