We just hired a new VP that’s over our group. He obviously comes from the old school/clock watching mentality.

After three weeks, he’s already questioning my employees time as he’s noticed some get there later and don’t stay late or vice versa as some get there early and cut out early if nothing is going on.

I had trouble sleeping two nights ago and got to work around 9ish as the extra couple hours of sleep helped. I typically average getting to work around 6-7ish. I didn’t think anything of it as I really didn’t need to be in the office until my first meeting at 10. He called me into his office and questioned it. He will also randomly call around 4:30 everyday and ask a stupid question, and I know he’s just seeing who’s there.

If this keeps up, I’ll be looking for a new job soon. I understand there are times when people need to be in the office but when will this butts in seats concept die???

He was hired to do the dirty work so get ready. You all will either tighten up or you’ll be gone.

Listen. You're wasting his time on here now, so I suggest to you to behave and log off. Don't make us call him.

Just making that paper trail. Get ahead of the situation and find a better job while the market is good.

Clock watchers are useless but I see it more and more as time goes by.....I'm an old schooler but not a clock watcher.

Does your VP work out of the same office as you?

I understand what you’re getting at, but my question is this,

Is your group high performing or are y’all just meeting expectations and barely?

If you’re high performing, he can pound sand. If your group is just barely getting the job done or not meeting expectations, expect heads to roll

I’ve never had a job with fluid punch-in times.

Whether working in the hotel/hospitality industry, or now, the hospital, work starts at 7.

Anything later than 7 is considered late and frankly rude to the dude that is waiting on his relief.

With that said, David Griffin is probably gonna draft Zion Williamson to put butts in seats.

Hey, new VP is the hatchet man. Everyone reports to someone and his new objective is to cut the fat to show 'em he was the right man for the job. OP isn't smart enough to figure it out and will be stealing copper by July.

Will die with the boomers. Most places are going opposite direction and encouraging flex schedules and remote work.

To echo Oilfield, it comes down to performance. If someone is a badass, I don’t care when they work. I don’t even care how many hours they work. As long as they perform at the highest level, I value them and treat them like an adult.

But if someone so much as thinks about saying that they couldn’t/didn’t get something done because they “didn’t have time”, I’ll metaphorically hang a clock around their neck until they perform or die.

If you baws were killing it they wouldn’t need to overhaul your department. Get a new job now or tighten up!

It depends on what type of job you are talking about. Certain roles have set times to be there and leave, others can be more flexible. Operators have set times, maintenance has set times, most other roles are somewhat flexible but if you are hourly you need to be there for the hours you are scheduled. Many support roles can work from home some of the time but you need to be "online and available" during the working hours. I hate the lack of work ethic most of the younger engineers have; show up around 8 with their Starbucks when everyone else is there for 6:30-7, and then haul arse out before 4 because they have to get to their social activities (even if their section of the plant is having issues). Glad I only have a few more years left to deal with it.

Office baws have more flexibility, as long as they get results and are efficient who cares if they are in their seats at certain times. Performance is what matters most.

The main problem with coming and going at your personal convenience is that it makes it more difficult to work with other people both inside and outside of your particular company/dept.

That’s great you got your work done in 4 hours, but someone needed a file/information you had at the office, or wanted to have a quick meeting about XYZ while you were at the adult video store at 2:30pm on a Tuesday.

It’s the opposite now for us. If there isn’t anything ordered, we flex off ridiculously fast. It’s all about efficiency now.

Why do you show up at 6-7am and work to 5? Seems more like you just want to work your own schedule and not the schedule your boss wants you to work.

Reminds me of how all the exempt employees in my office have to be told it’s OK to leave an hour early on Fridays
