Maybe I'm old school, but if there's an expectation for you to be there between 8-5, and you're not going to be there by 8, you should probably let your boss know that
I don't disagree, again, my premise is why must it be 8 to 5 for the sake of being 8 to 5? Some places obviously are mandated by a schedule, most professional service firms like engineering, accounting, or finance are not.

This is why you have that opinion. I work in an office where we can work remotely and can come and go as long as our clients are covered and happy. I normally get to the office around 8:30, but if traffic is bad or something else happens, I have no problem going in late but I will let someone know, although that's not always the case because sometimes the office is empty.

Ahh, poor baby couldn't sleep well. Maybe if Mommy brings you some milk, tucks you in and reads you a story you can be to work on time the next day like an adult. You can't even meet a bare minimum standard of being punctual and you're blaming the boss for your own irresponsibility. Suppose something came up that needed to be dealt with, or a coworker needed something, and you were nowhere to be found, or off getting a latte because you can't manage sleepy time. It's only a matter of time before your lazy arse gets deservedly shite canned.

FTR, I don't believe anything you have to say much less this particular scenario with your "VP" and your "employees".
I do agree with the sentiment though. For once.

"If this keeps up, I'll be looking for a new job soon."
I totally agree. If your useless millennial arse worked for me I would make that happen for you.

I work in a field where we have flexibility and as long as your work gets done and you are around when you need to be it is fine.
But, it is also a job where the more time and resource you put in the more productive you are. Being productive beyond what is expected is a good way to earn raises and promotions and have better job security.
So I always tell newer folks that more pay and more job security will come with exceeding expectations.

Wrong on all counts. Be where you're supposed to be, when you're supposed to be there. You can't fail to meet your obligation and then blame someone else for it.

FTR, I don’t think every office should be a free for all, but as salaried employees there shouldnt be a required punch in time.
All over our office people get there between 6-9am and leave random times. It’s always been an ‘unwritten’ rule in our group to be in the office M-Thurs 9-3 at a minimum. If I need you anytime outside of that, I can call or text if it’s critical enough. Friday is a little more laxed as most people work from home if nothing is going on.
I don’t really see a reason I should be ‘talked to’ about getting to work at 9am only because I usually get there at 7am. It’s not that I was needed for anything...it was solely because my butt wasn’t in a seat.

What's the "vibe" in other areas of the company, outside your group? Is it more like the new guy, or more like what your group used to enjoy?
The butts in seats mentality will eventually die, but it won't be quick or direct. A lot of companies "listened" and started being more flexible. However, these companies never trained their managers/execs how to manage in this new paradigm, and/or the older managers/execs never wanted to learn. So the ability to manage suffered, which hurt production. Now, you are seeing a bit of a swing away from flexibility which is 100 percent due to boomers being unwilling to change how they manage.
Eventually, those boomers will move on, and when they do, flexibility will return.
I had a partner who used to do this. I told him if he called my office / walked by and I wasn't there, he was free to call my cell phone.
I've been to a lot of workshops and read a lot about. The old phrase was "work-life balance" which is a load of crap because there is no balance. Forward-thinking companies are more about "work-life integration". It's the, hey, I'm leaving at 5 pm for the kids soccer game, but I'll be online at home from 8-10 pm. Or, it's the hey my kid is sick today, but I'll work from home and you can call me anytime.

I was about to pull into the office this morning at 8am, but realized that’s pretty early so I went to get breakfast. Got to the office at 8:40 and went to take a shite before going to my desk. My boss isn’t even here yet so I’ll probably leave early.

Why is it arbitrary? If works start at eight, it starts at eight. Not 8:15, not 9:12, not 10:05. Not at some random time of your own choosing. If you can't be to work at the designated time, find another job that allows you to come in when you please.

I hope so. I think offices are necessary but people should be allowed flexible schedules and be able to even work from home.
If you work in BR then it should be part of the benefits package to be able to work hours around traffic and even work from home some days to avoid it all together.
At the end of the day it shouldn't be about hours but about tasks being completed.

Do you know what the word arbitrary means?

I have a job that allows me to come in when I please, and I wouldn't take a job, unless for stupid type money, that wouldn't be the same.

My work recently transitioned to a 4 day work week M-T and has seen an increase in revenue over the past 6 months or so since they changed.
They are old school about being locked in during work hours, but makes it much better when you know you’ve got that 3 day weekend coming (4 day weekend on holidays)
