Indeed. My comment was maybe a tad hyperbolic, but I'm in my late 40's and have been working since I was 16 so have a pretty large sample size. These 2 are among the worst I've ever worked with.

These days upward mobility in one company is no longer valued. There is little need to put in extra unpaid time to get ahead. You get your 3-5 years of experience and leverage it for a higher position at a new company.

hate the lack of work ethic most of the younger engineers have; show up around 8 with their Starbucks when everyone else is there for 6:30-7, and then haul arse out before 4 because they have to get to their social activities (even if their section of the plant is having issues).
Yeah frick those guys for emphasizing their personal life over the company bottom line and free labor

I had trouble sleeping two nights ago and got to work around 9ish as the extra couple hours of sleep helped. I typically average getting to work around 6-7ish. I didn’t think anything of it as I really didn’t need to be in the office until my first meeting at 10. He called me into his office and questioned it. He will also randomly call around 4:30 everyday and ask a stupid question, and I know he’s just seeing who’s there.
Oh you poor baby
Look, I am not one of those that thinks you have to come in early and stay late but if your job is 8-5, your but should be in your seat during that time. If you don't need to stay late to get your work done, I don't hold that against you. I don't believe in sitting at my desk staring at TD waiting on my boss to leave before I do.

Clock watching is probably what he does best!!! Pathetic.

The entire premise of the thread is why should it be 8 to 5? Guy said his day didn't really start until a meeting at 10 and he was there an hour early to prepare for it.
I had travel troubles this Sunday because of the weather in Dallas. I got home about 1:30 after traveling all day so I came in about 9:15 on Monday. No one gave a shite because I didn't have anything people were relying on me for until that afternoon.
We have people that arrive at our office between about 6:30 and 9:30, as long as you are here for what's on your calender no one gives a frick. With that said, it's still expected that your work gets done and that was an issue with a new associate fairly recently. He was promptly talked to and problem solved.
This really isn't that complicated.

like the one's the employers poorly invest/manage and lose so the long term employees are fricked after 20 years of working at the same job?

Maybe it shouldn't be, but that's the job he signed up for.

I had a boss accuse me of leaving early when I was out taking client meetings. We had a very heated meeting where I shite on his accusations and even called clients to verify I was where i said I was. Went home that night and put in three resumes. Quit one week later and told him his treatment of employees was why I was leaving. Baseless assumptions and accusations are never the way to a happy staff. Also, in this day and age, punching a time clock as a salaried employee is bullshite. If the work is done and the company is efficient and successful, why not allow flexibility

Maybe I'm old school, but if there's an expectation for you to be there between 8-5, and you're not going to be there by 8, you should probably let your boss know that. I realize every office has different dynamics and expectations, but that to me just comes down to common courtesy. Hell, I let my office know if I'm running just 15 minutes behind in the morning.
I've also never worked in an environment where employees were free to come and go as they pleased.

Depends on the field.

Great point. Pensions suck

Problem with someone like that is he sees your group's productivity with the hours they do log and automatically assumes that will increase with more time. Not realizing it's that flexibility that has resulted in said productivity.

We have people that had to manually pick invoices out of a client's warehouse when they signed up, shite changes.
