I hate the lack of work ethic most of the younger engineers have; show up around 8 with their Starbucks when everyone else is there for 6:30-7, and then haul arse out before 4 because they have to get to their social activities

Is it lack of work ethic or simply a culture shift? These days upward mobility in one company is no longer valued. There is little need to put in extra unpaid time to get ahead. You get your 3-5 years of experience and leverage it for a higher position at a new company.

Sounds like you are unhappy he wants to get the amount of work out of his employees that he is paying them for. Why does that make you mad?

I am, within reason. If I see a pattern of sloth like behavior I will definitely call someone on it. Anytime you have a group that works as a team, punctuality will become a problem. You can't keep making schedules around someone else's slack behavior.

Other people notice, and it becomes an issue.

Most places are going opposite direction and encouraging flex schedules and remote work.

Actually, the pendulum is starting to swing back. Example: DC was encouraging offices to have remote work sites and flex schedules to help traffic, but after several years, a good number of business are shifting back because of productivity issues. There are still plenty of businesses going toward remote work sites and flex time, but the counter trend is starting to emerge for those businesses who were on the forefront of it.

Just saying.

I don't think it is a case of working when you feel like it. It is more of a "why do I need to be glued to my office chair from 8-5 if my work is completely finished and the next thing won't happen until tomorrow".

I’d quit if I had that rigid of a work schedule. Could not do that with kids.

Maybe you should communicate that your are going to be late and he’d probably be fine. You can’t have a manager always wonders when their employees are going to show up and leave.

I think a lot of them have seen their parents work themselves to death without much to show for it with companies reducing pensions and benefits. And not really respecting long term employees, by cutting their jobs for lower paid/ less experienced employees.

As long as employees are producing, then flexibility should be allowed. You can always deal with it on a case by case basis if it gets out of hand. Study after study has shown employees tend to be happier and more productive when they have some flexibility, good benefits, etc.

No, there will always be managers with that attitude. I work in a pretty laid back, progressive office and I'm expected to be here from 8-5 every day. There is a ton of flexibility, but communication on that is paramount. If I just started showing up at 9 every morning with no explanation, there'd be a problem.

We are a service company though, and our clients expect someone to be available during normal business hours. I doubt the owner would be as rigid otherwise.

I've always said there's only one person I need to impress, and that's myself. To be a leader, you gotta lead. I have to know I earned my pay and worked with my coworkers as well as possible.

If you're work is autonomous it's no issue. If you're part of an interdependent group, it's a huge issue.

People still can perceive work ethic.

If you are working 40+ and some weeks you work 39 and most weeks you work 44+ that’s one thing. But if you are routinely barely getting in your 40 because you pinch off early on Fridays and then routinely leave early during the week or show up late, that is BS.

Every employee should have a few down work hours to do things like check on their 401k, clean their desk, organize, and other office ‘housekeeping’ to keep organized. When employees pinch off every day as soon as their necessary work is done then they aren’t doing those type of things and taking a breath to think outside the box.

I’m a millennial and I guarantee that I do more work, and bring more to the table, than every boomer in my office. They’re essentially dead weight and are basically riding on the fact that they’ve been there ‘forever’

The 2 boomers in our office are 2 of the most worthless co-workers I've ever experienced. Lazy and entitled, and refuse to learn new technology or processes. They are at least on time every morning, and rarely take unnecessary time off.

Can we say this upfront?

There are lazy people of every generation and hard working people in every generation. If you’re a boomer that never got promoted to manage a team, there is a good chance you’re bad at your job/lazy/unmotivated.

If you’re a millennial that just barely gets the work done but expects that just because you show up you should be promoted, you suck too

I have a window of 8 to 8:30 for when I typically arrive for work. As long as I meet deadline, my bosses don’t really care. Your new VP sounds like a dick with too much authority.

Correct

Or Union. It's ridiculous how hard it is to fire union personnel and how easy it is for them to do the least amount of work to keep their job.

God this all sounds so miserable to me. I would hate to have to work a shite ton of unpaid hours just to get ahead instead of having the quality of my work being the barometer for advancement.

I am so glad I get to do my work on my own terms.
