Hell, why stop there. Let’s forgive all mortgages and credit cards while we’re at it. Car loans? Payday Loans? Personal Loans? Why the hell not?

Let me run up some debt first. It'd suck if all I got was $6k forgiven.

Student loan debt exceeds $1.5 trillion. Wiping that out would reduce a large source of income from the feds. That would have to be picked up somewhere. You figure out where.

It is not simple book wiping.

That's still book wiping.

Anyway, I'm not actually calling for forgiveness. I think that simply reducing interest to zero or near zero would make more sense. It's a debt that can't be discharged in bankruptcy. Charging 7% interest serves very little interest, as many people simply pay the interest until they reach the existing levels of loan forgiveness.

Let's say the government "forgives" your loan. How do you think that balance gets paid? Yeh, that loan now gets passed on to everyone else who pays taxes.

I paid my tuition. Yes, it was a lot less than yours. Still, if you get yours paid for, I want my little amount back also. Do you agree?

Guys, I just refinanced my house a few years ago and would appreciate it if we all just chipped in to help pay for my bank loan.

I am ok with it if your degree is rescinded.

BTW, I joined the La national guard to pay for college. I believe that deal is still available.

Why dont we pay off the loans out of social security, end that failure of a program and call it even?

I took out what most would consider an absurd amount to go to grad school. I knew going in that I'd have to do well enough to get a job that would pay enough for me to pay them back in 10 years. I ate shite, drove around the same beat up car for 10 years, and dumped most of my income on those damn loans and paid them off.

Student loan debt is achievable if you don't go out and buy the latest stuff and squabble away all your money like an idiot.

I graduated from an in state school in accounting so that I could spend little for school and have a job when I got out. I also studied and got out in 4 years. Might not have made any of those decisions if it weren’t for my personal finances. Paid off my wife’s loans the week we got married.

Now you want me to finance your college experience?

Also the biggest idiots I know in college took out student loans so they had money to eat out, go to bars, etc.

I paid my own way and have fully paid off my loans.

I'm not as against it as most people here. I would be open to certain paths to forgiveness.

For instance, the cost to get degrees necessary to teach can be hard to repay on an actual teacher's salary. I wouldn't be against a program that if you are current on your loans and have 20 years of service as a teacher, the balance is forgiven.

I'm not a fan of blanket forgiveness. A forgiveness program blending payments plus work service for a significant period of time...that incentivizes good work and can keep quality people in important careers where the income isn't tremendous.

Then that's your fault for going to such an expensive college.

What they should do is wipe out the interest for federal loans and/or allow people to pay it with pre-tax money.

Because I pay taxes and it’s my taxes that will be used to pay for you to go to college.

Why do you think the rest of the country should pay for your degree?

So, how much are they talking about forgiving?

My wife and I put ourselves thru school and then both of our kids. Myself, I used my GI bill. Oh, both the wife and I worked when in school, same for the kids.
