Say 1998 Michael Jordan vs. 2026 Lionel Messi.

Who had a higher percentage of the world knowing who they were.

For the older people on here, what was MJ like in the 1990s?

World wide: Messi due to the Internet and social media.

Messi, and it’s not even close.

A bigger factor in that is social media

Its just not true.

Jordan was perhaps the biggest athlete of all time.

Maybe people are too young to remember the Olympic teams.

You're conflating the US with the world.

Soccer is a lot more popular than basketball worldwide. Being a great soccer player makes you more famous worldwide than being a great basketball player.

Even if it weren't for the internet, Messi would still be more famous worldwide than Jordan ever was.

It’s Messi. Jordan was a global superstar but Messi status is his equal, except it’s in the world’s most popular sport and in the 24/7 digitally connected age.

Famous people of past decades were more well known than famous people of today. Back then there was no social media and everyone watched the same few tv shows or news programs. Now everyone is streaming or subscribed to only the entertainment they choose from a narrow field of their likes/dislikes.

The answer might still be Messi, but I don’t think many in the U.S. realize how big Jordan was internationally. He’s credited with the NBA getting popular in China.

Spinoff: who is the most famous person in the world? I had this debate with my wife a couple years ago during the start of Swift/Kelce and her big tour.

She was adamant it was Taylor Swift and I said it was either a soccer player, the pope, or outside shot for an American president.

Agree

Jordan and Tiger are the 2 guys that transcend their sport and the USA

Almost everybody on the planet knows who they are.

Anyone saying Jordan needs a permanent idiot flare so we can know to disregard their opinions on any/all subjects

You think pre-social media people in favelas in Brazil or Africans in villages knew Jordan?

It’s not close for Messi and you are a fool if you think otherwise
