Agreed. I think if you went around the world with a stack of celebrities and asked randoms if they can name them, Trump is most identifiable.
But probably at a much lower percentage than people expect.

Yall are forgetting that the NBA didn’t have nearly the international audience in the 90’s as they do today. The internet was in its infancy. There was no streaming services to watch games. Overseas audiences only had a few chances a year to watch an NBA game on TV.
Nowadays, fans can watch international sports live on streaming apps and see every game they want. Youtube has all the highlight clips. Social media. All make it a lot easier to be exposed more to international athletes today than 30 years ago

Hell, the NBA was barely popular in the US in the early 80's. The Bird/Magic -Celtics/Lakers Finals battles is what made the NBA popular. Before that, CBS showed the finals on tape delay in order to not preempt the regular time slots of Dallas and The Dukes of Hazzard
Jordan was a great player. But what made him famous internationally was Nike, not necessarily his play on the court.

If you look at it from a US centric point of view, Jordan gets the nod. If you look at it from a worldwide point of view, Messi's fame blows Jordan out of the water.
