Has to be Messi! Nothing against Jordan, it isn't his fault that the global stage is a lot larger than the stage he was on and at that time in history. Soccer is huge in other countries, and much more appreciated than basketball.

He was a sports global icon before there were sports global icons.
It's likely Messi because there are almost 3 billion people more in the world today than in 1992.
As said earlier, in 1992 for example, the buildup to a sports event like the Olympics went for months.
Culturally, it's Jordan for sure. shoes/clothing, he is almost equal to the swoosh for Nike. Messi doesn't have nearly the brand recognition of Jordan

Depends on the country. Basketball is bigger than soccer in China, Taiwan, the Philippines.
I'll say Messi too, but I do think some of you are downplaying how huge Michael Jordan is

You could watch Jordan in the entire civilized world during his peak.

This is a good conversation. I’d say Messi has pulled ahead since winning the World Cup in 2022 while still playing at a high level, whereas Ronaldo has fallen off a cliff in the past few years; Messi has certified himself as the goat and ended the debate as to who’s better.
However, it’s highly likely that Ronaldo was the bigger athlete/celebrity in the previous decade.
