Easily a higher percentage knows who Messi is…..you can go today and ask a starving kid in South Africa who MJ is and he won’t have a clue….but he knows Messi.
Hell Ronaldo is more recognizable than MJ on a world stage too…..maybe Mbappe as well.

Messi for reasons already outlined. Jordan was huge, but Messi has conquered ares of the globe Jordan couldn’t simply because of exposure and popularity of the worlds most popular (by far) sport.

Messi and it’s not even close.
Granted MJ was certainly the first U.S. athlete that really gained international fame outside a few Olympic sport athletes. Even in MJ’s prime not everyone in the world had access to his games. I was in Europe during a couple summers when the Bull’s won NBA championships and few Euros were paying much attention and it wasn’t easy to watch the games. I watched one game 7 at a Hooters in Amsterdam at 3am local time.

How could it not be Messi given worldwide appeal of soccer and today’s internet/social media giving accessibility to watch a player. Can’t people in Africa simply watch a Twitter video of Messi. Were people across Europe, India, China, Middle East, and South America wearing MJ jerseys 30 years ago?

In MJ’s day I’m not sure it would be possible to find any inner city black youth in Paris, London, or Barcelona. I was in all three places during the 80’s and 90’s. I recall seeing one black person in London and he played for Liverpool and the English National Team in the 80’s.

Definitely in some places like London and Japan. Not so much in Belarus, Poland, Singapore. Even in those places where there was market penetration of merchandise it was very hard to actually watch a game. The jerseys got there before the sport or the league were popular.

In the last 40 years I’ve been to seven countries in Europe and one in Central America. Walk into any bar with tvs and the only thing you’ll see is soccer.
