4x2 unless you currently have a specific use that will need 4x4.

Plus, there is less to moving parts to maintain on a two-wheel drive.

It used to be a huge difference between a 2wd and 4wd truck when it came to handling, ride quality, steering, MPG, etc. With modern vehicles, there is really no difference and its there if you need it. I’ve only owned one 2wd truck and got in a ton of situations where I needed to call on someone or something to get me out. Just go with the 4wd. There will be little difference overall handling, it will be there when you need it and it will hold its value better.

I’ve had both. Nice to have 4WD if needed, but if it’s not really necessary for you I wouldn’t fret about it.

Best truck I’ve ever owned was my 06 GMC Duramax dually. It pulled anything anywhere with lots of power to spare.

I have a 4 x 2, but wish I had 4 x 4, which would have come in handy this morning when I was having problems getting up the levee after duck hunting.

4x4 for those sketchy boat ramps.

4X4 because when you need it you need it.

Also, real bad weather like rain and snow it helps.

I just bought my Taco in May with 4x4. Ihave used it a couple of times, otherwise probably don't need, but it is there is needed. Also, I'm not a poor that is going to whine about a couple grand for a $40k vehicle.

This. The times you need it, you need it.

A 2 wheel drive truck with the Detroit locker (G80 in the GM trucks) works just fine on slippery boat ramps.

Uhhh, no a G80 or “Gov Lock” isn’t anywhere near a real Detroit.

I have/had 2 GM trucks with the factory Gov Lock and have a Bronco with a real Detroit.

When the Detroit finally comes unlocked (rarely) you THINK axle parts are going to spit out.

When a Gov Lock comes unlocked (often) the end result IS axle parts spat out.

Nobody regrets getting a 4x4 after the check is written.

Trucks ride stiff enough without adding 4 WD. No need for it and it’s added expense. I rode a long trip in a couple GMC 4 WD this year. Made me miss my F-150 2WD.

I’ve had 4 trucks with the G80. They work exactly as advertised - for hundreds of thousands of miles. Never a lick of trouble. They’ve been putting them in trucks since at least the T400 generation in the late 1980s.

They are supposed to lock and unlock as needed.

And a locking rear diff like that helped me avoid using four wheel drive a lot. It’s a great product.

It works very well and, since it’s available on 2 wheel drive trucks, is an ideal option for people who want traction on slipper boat ramps or loose surfaces while towing, but don’t really need four wheel drive.

Bought my 4x2 when we lived in Houston. Now live in KC and have to deal with snow. Looking at getting a Gladiator soon for 4x4

I bought 4x4 and have used it maybe 6 times in the last year. Boat ramps mostly. I also have a fairly steep hill in my yard that is 100' or more that 4wd keeps me from spinning tires in my grass.

And you still missed the whole point-

An Eaton G80 isn’t a Detroit, even thought you specifically called it that.

4x4. I drive 99% of time on pavement. But I was convinced to get 4x4 after sliding down a gravel road backwards when we rented a cabin in the mountains a few years back. I’ll always have 1 4x4 vehicle from now on.

Depends where you live and what you intend to do with the vehicle. Most people in LA don't need a 4x4. If you need it, you should get it. The main argument against 4x4 to me (aside from initial cost) was the potential maintenance issues for no added benefit to me.

That being said, if you live anywhere near snow - get a 4x4. Don't even consider a 4x2 truck. It's immensely frustrating getting stuck in 2 inches of snow.

Yup, every dollar you pay extra for the 4x4 option will be returned when you sell the truck.

If you live in south Louisiana and don’t go off road and will drive it into the ground, that’s the only scenario I would consider a 4x2.
