John Melvin wanted a college athletics program so he had to start a college.

I was supposed to have made my last post on this board back about four weeks ago, but I’m making an exception because I knew John Melvin.

He was a member of the Ragin Cajuns Track & Field team, and passed away in a motorcycle accident in Lafayette one school day, when a van pulled out in front of him on Pinhook Road.

Berwick High School hosts the John Melvin Relays to this day in his honor.

His brother in law and sister started John Melvin University. I believe they tried to start a similar school in Texas, prior to the one in Crowley, but those plans either folded or were changed.

I’ve been told by a couple folks that the brother in law has before reached out directly to folks on Facebook and other platforms who question the validity of the school in Crowley, maybe even hinting a libel.

Take that for what you will. Just wanted to mostly provide some perspective on who John was to those who may not know. He was a genuine good dude and funny as hell to be around.

I shall now go back into retirement. Hope everyone has an awesome weekend. God Bless.

There was a thread a few weeks back about parents who'd dumped a ton of money into their kids travel ball careers, only for the college offers to never come.

John Melvin is for those kids.

They're taking advantage of the families and kids who are too stupid to realize they're just not good enough. So they go to places like John Melvin to keep playing, hoping they can transfer to a real school eventually, but practically none do. So they're wasting time, and lots of money, at a pretend university with bullshite online classes and no accreditation.

A couple years ago someone on the MSB said they tried to recruit his kid, and their angle was something along the lines of, it's $14,000/semester, but since their new they only offer 50% scholarships, so it's $7000 a semester.

Business must be boomin because the same dude opened another location in Pensacola not long ago.

this is 100% true. i saw the messages the David (the brother in law) sent to one person and i have also heard that others received similar messages for questioning the validity and the intentions of the university. i went to high school with john and was 2 years ahead of him. he was universally loved by everyone that knew him and he was just one of those people that everyone enjoyed being around. his family always seemed like good, upstanding folks. it's always amazed me that they were ok with his name being used for what i can just describe as a huge scam. i dont know about the other sports at the crowley location and the ones in florida but i know the baseball program in crowley is littered with kids who didn't get much playing time on their varisty teams in high school. they are sold on the fact of playing "college baseball" so they go there. the parents fall for it and allow it to happen. they have to pay for everything so basically it turns into travel ball for young adults. i would imainge its pretty much like that across the board for most sports and i'm shocked that they are still getting away with it.

They tried to open a campus north of Pace, FL which is a short drive from Pensacola.... they got shot down for re-zoning. Nobody wanted a campus near the location.

i can't find a campus in Pensacola even though their website refers to one (with no address)

they get talked about here a lot. It’s a garbage dump for travel sports athletes to be “college” athletes

If this is what it really is... That is taking this shite to the next level. "Did you kid not get a baseball scholarship to LSU, SELU, UL, Southern, Nicholls, UL Monroe, LA Tech, LSU Shreveport, BRCC and other college programs throughout Louisiana? Don't worry! There is still a chance. John Melvin University. Remember, you are shitty enough to play for us".

My degree from John Melvin resulted in a fantastic career, so lay off my school.

Go Melvins!

How old are you? Are you in college or a recent graduate?
You need to visit a college to really experience the deplorable quality of the material being taught in any “Studies” degree. It is pure emotional manipulation and indoctrination. The students are literally and actually dumber for having been taught such clap trap.

A 90 minute Netflix documentary on this school and its baseball program probably wouldn't be a huge hit but it would be very interesting

Who do they even play?
What’s their W/L usually?
Do they have a conference and a conference champion?

They are the John Curtis of college

But without the talented athletes or coaches

They will take your tuition money, for the Glory of God.

I noticed a while back that they must put a ton of effort into scrubbing their physical addresses from the internet. I went looking a while back and all I could find buried pretty deep was their original location, which was a metal building between a scrap yard and a cemetery off Hwy90. They now share a building with a dumpster rental company off Roller Rd in Crowley and a "Student Union" off of N. Parkerson but they've pretty much scrubbed all of that info.

I went looking again and it looks like they now have 2 Florida "locations", one near Pensacola and another in a church in Winter Park, FL near Orlando.

Travel ball parent/kids must be pretty stupid to fall for this scam.
