That we don't get paid instantly when we complete a project. We quote the job, we win the project and we finish the project on time. Always.

Why do we have to wait 30 days after that to get paid?

I hate my boss. Her job is her identity. Works 7 AM to 10 PM. Will call us at 11 PM at night to ask random arse questions that can easily wait until the morning. True mental illness. I’ve told her she truly needs medical needs help.

Back in my day everybody worked like this. You lazy millennials are the sick ones because you can’t do any work without your add meds and participation trophies

That I have to come and sit at my desk from 9 till 5 on days that I know that I have no work.

I live 15 minutes away so they could easily call me in if work somehow shows up.

This is only the case for maybe 6-8 weeks total throughout the year but I wish the bosses could use common sense and not make people sit at their desks with nothing to do.

What are some of the things you like/hate about family owned business? As a barometer, how big is the company (approx revenue)?

Around $10 mil. Small (around 30 employees) company that is in a specialized construction and engineering field. With it being a small family owned company it's nice to be treated like family, but at the same time they have actual family members working here so when decisions are made non-blood related family members get treated like the slow cousin.

The technology curve between the old school guys and the new. Surveying is really about to take a huge leap forward as far as tech available goes and I'm not sure a lot of the older guys are going to make it.

They get frustrated with the new toys pretty quickly when 95% of the time that tech is making our jobs tremendously easier and more efficient.

Which is kind of a double edged sword because the old school guys legit know how to survey just cant figure out the new instruments. New school guys know how to run the new stuff but dont know what the hell they're looking for. Quite a conundrum

My office is not the greatest at delegating hours (and it's not a huge firm). They will often overwork 2 people and then have gaps elsewhere in the firm where people are twirling thumbs for a week, wondering if it's poor planning or if they are being sacked.

I like the place, though.
