Three children and I have never heard of this. On it's face, it makes some sense.
I will note one observation that I have had over the years, those parents that obsess over things like this, go out of their way to create a sterile environment to protect their kids from illness, obsess over organic foods, etc. end up with the weak, sickly children.
Those parents who just let their kids live, let them roll around in the mud, climb a tree, "3 seconds? I'm sure it's fine to eat", and just run around and be active, those kids end up healthy and robust.

The medical ignorance in this thread is astounding.
This has been a medical recommendation since the 1970s.
And everyone acting all high and mighty in here likely acted the same way with their first child.
They just want to act all high and mighty.
I have dealt with thousands of new parents, and the only ones who acted all blase were the completely trashy individuals who didn’t care what happened to their child.
Almost all parents are scared shitless about every little thing during their first child’s newborn period.

RSV is no joke. 40 years ago our son was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks when he was 10 days old. He recovered with from it, but was on oxygen for most of the hospitalization. He was born healthy, but it came on very quickly. I think it’s the most common respiratory virus in kids, but it’s life threatening for newborns.
Just a heads up-this probably won’t be the last time you disagree with them regarding your grandbabies.

Give it a few weeks OP, you'll soon get all the hugs, kisses, play time, sour puke, and stinky diapers you can handle... then you get to send them home with their parents.

There's a big difference between putting a toddler in a bubble and not wanting your newborn to contract herpes

And, again, the recommendation not to kiss newborns has been around since the 1970s.

I don't think they understand that a newborn is different than a 6mo old.
My daughter had rules, of course, for her infants- but as toddlers/preschoolers she's very not bubbled.
I'm sure I had rules too, back then... it's just been awhile and that era of life was a blur.

My wife's cousin scheduled 15 minute visits when they had their 1st child. Even to his own parents. Now, they have 3 kids and he doesn't give a shite who comes to his house.

that is fairly reasonable. New borns are either eating, shitting or sleeping. The window for breast feeding moms to eat, shite, shower and sleep is pretty tight.
by 2 and 3 kids, you want people to visit to occupy the older kids more than anything. Plus the risk of germ exposure is out the window because the kids are going to bring much worse home anyway.
