Last car I shopped for was a truck. 2011.
What’s new? What should I know? Looking at a car. Acura Integra. Honda Accord type/tier of car.
Just hate the whole car buying experience. Has it gotten better in 15 years??

Even worse. Only positive these days is ability to cross shop a negotiate with multiple dealers online.

I’ll never buy a new car again unless I can just order it and pick it up like anything else.

Just when you think you have a deal, the finance manager enters and starts selling

Do not finance through the dealership if you opt for financing. A dealership arranges financing through a lender, typically a CUDL system (Credit Union Direct Link) they secure a "buy rate" the lowest interest rate the lender offers you based on your credit score. However, they are legally allowed to add a markup, typically between 1% and 2.5% to the APR before presenting the offer to you. This markup goes straight into the dealership’s pocket as profit, costing you thousands of dollars in extra interest over the life of the loan. Secure financing on your own, don't let them know you have done this and focus the negotiation on the price of the car not monthly payments.

Create a burner email and communicate with them through that email.

So just lock in the lowest price? When they do that then tell them you are using your own financing?

Don't underestimate the value of a 6 month old, used BMW. Can be ~20% off sticker with 3 years maintenance included and a 4 year warranty

I’ve bought 9 since 2011
Not much has really changed. Best two experiences has been ordering and buying exactly what I wanted.

Same. Bought my Chevy Camaro (let the jokes rain down) after my 2002 Trans AM (more jokes, forthcoming) was stolen at JazzFest in 2010. We just bought an ECM, but it didn't pan out.
If I have to buy....
Looking at classics (mechanical v. electronic)
Newer - Mid-engine Corvette (but I am not an 80 yo guy)
Lotus (all older)

Out the door price is what matters.
Negotiate the new car price and your trade separately.
Online negotiation across numerous dealers for the same make and model is easiest and best process.

Probably depends on the dealership, your salesman, and you.
Don't have a champagne taste on a beer budget, don't negotiate in bad faith, and don't be an a-hole, and it's been my experience there are reasonable deals and good experiences available.
Mine was pretty damn simple, I got what I wanted for a price, rate and note I was satisfied with, I got good treatment, the coverage I wanted and I absolutely love my vehicle (dealer demo).

Exactly what I’ve done in the past, but every time the dealer magically finds me a better rate.

Better buy the expensive arse service contract. Insane maintenance costs
