Its been a long time since I was in college, but even way back then people would use student loans to pay for cruises, TVs, stereos, etc because they were 20 year morons who had no concept of fiscal self restraint once they found someone to hand them a bunch of cash. I can only imagine how much worse it is today with the current illiterate imbeciles who are taking out these loans.

My ex graduated with a teaching degree with no student loan debt at my insistence.
After the divorce he went back for a second bachelor’s. It took him 8 years to realize he was never going to pass Calculus 2 and he’s in over $200k debt.
I hope they make him repay it.

Law has an insanely high income ceiling once you’ve been working for a certain number of years. $150k isn’t far from the norm for guys that have 5-10 years of experience.
Both of you are right. I’ve always assumed the “ditch digger” comment means trades. A guy with a $7,000 associates degree in the trades can also easily get to 150k in the same amount of time. Both lawyers and tradesman are needed, and should qualify for student loans. What shouldn’t happen is massive debt for unneeded jobs.

The overwhelming majority of tradesmen will never even come close to clearing $100k during their careers. Comparing the trades and law like they’re even remotely similar is next level stupidity.

A few guys in my fraternity had this down to a science, including withdrawing from school rather than letting the credits hit their transcript so that they didn’t hit the hours threshold for financial aid cutoff.

Professional schools (med, law) will give hefty cost of living loans. But they know those people will pay it back at a 90%+ clip

That's the problem with alot of the left's policies. I truly believe they are started with the best intentions but they fail to take into account the human emotion of greed. I think you’re confusing trade pay stats with people that are actually tradesman. If you’re a master license plumber/electrician you’re making 100 plus just by showing up. And if you decide to work in a plant/offshore you’re making 150-250.
Back to the OP, you can do this all with a 2 year, $10,000 degree.

BTW only morons believe the government can forgive debt. The government only passes the responsibility of paying that debt from the people who took on the debt to people who did not take on the debt. I’m probably the exception, but I did it. My brother and I were living with my twice divorced, single mother who basically had no job skills. We weren’t poor, we were po’.
My Pell Grant covered my tuition and books, but I got additional student loans I believe three times to help pay bills at home while I was in school and couldn’t work full time. My mom was a cashier at a small grocery store at the time, and that didn’t make ends meet.
It actually took me five years to graduate because I sat out two different semesters to work full time. I got my degree AND repaid all of my student loans fairly quickly.

In the mid-90s I was entering my last semester of grad school and already had a job lined up, but didn’t have money for an apartment in the city where the job was. I took out $3,000 in student loans to help me until my first check came. I did pay it off within the year, but that money really helped me get started.
