Louisiana has 3 schools ranked inside the top 25, but what really got my attention was-

They'll loan you way more than what your tuition costs, and don't track what you do with the remainder once the tuition is paid. I think it is bull crap too. They should only loan you what is needed for tuition, books, room and board, and a meal plan.

The universities are in on the scam too. They don't care because they get a big piece of the pie too. Aside from high tuition, they have all kinds of bullshite charges that students are forced to pay.
Students are borrowing more than they should, but they aren't getting rich from this and they aren't living some lavish lifestyle on that extra money. It's not really that much extra money beyond what is used for school purposes.

Lenders should pay the school directly and require confirmation of attendance and passing grades.

While youre right in part. I just paid off a load of law school debt and Im better off and have a more comfortable job than not going. To each his own, sometimes debt is necessary and there is an ROI, sometimes people are just dumb. I dont have empathy for the dumb ones or lib arts majors.

Anecdotal: I have seen a few examples of people throwing money at entertainment items because they have access to funding based on the whole bullshite cottage industry of "a guy's baby mama is a student who is taking 3 hours at BRCC, so she and her potato-headed boyfriend get access to funds because they are:
Parents
"Single Parents"
Students
You know....the absolute backbone of Louisiana that keeps the state running....the chick and her bf that will be 43 percent of the way to those associate's degrees in 2030.

Law has an insanely high income ceiling once you’ve been working for a certain number of years. $150k isn’t far from the norm for guys that have 5-10 years of experience.
There’s a reason why they qualify for nearly all professional mortgage programs.

Six or seven years ago the janitor at work broke up with his gf. She must have done the cooking, because in enrolled in one class @ UNO for the meal plan.
He lived by campus, and he told me "Its great I get a free dinner everynight"
Coworker told him, you have to pay that money back. He responded not until I graduate, and there is no way Im graduating.

It is and I didn't understand the concept when I started as freshman. One of the orientation workers mentioned a refund check and later I starter hearing other students talk about the refund check they were going to get and what they were going to do with it.
I was on a combination of scholarships and what I could scrape together working. No loans fortunately, so there were no refund checks until my senior year when I pulled a couple of one off scholarships. It was modest overage, but a nice bit of extra jingle at the time.
TL;DR: there are plenty of students who get more loan money than they need and treat the overage (refund) as a cash payout they can do whatever they want with irrespective of the fact it is money they have to pay back.

They really should. It wouldn't be hard for all those costs to be compiled and then sent to the lender for disbursement of loan funds once you've qualfied.
The kiddos what miss on that refund check they intend to use for that new iPad though.
