I was driving down the road two hands on the wheel and eyes straight ahead when suddenly this talking shrubbery approaches me and totally distracted me.
A literal talking and walking shrubbery.

A phone in the hand, caught by two dudes in a bush.

People could just stop playing on their phones while driving.
My wife got a ticket on Essen for checking Google Maps on her phone while sitting at a red light.
Eta: It might have been a text? Been a while, so I’m not certain on that point. But was certainly sitting at a red light.

I've checked my phone at a redlight before. That should probably be treated differently as the driver is, imo, behaving responsibly.

That’s what she told the cop; he said that’s not how the law is written. She was fricking furious when she got to Zorba’s

As a new jersey resident, I have no problem with this.
In my town I wish the cops would do something about drivers who don't stop for people in crosswalks, bikers and scooter riders included.

What about putting on make up?
Or these idiots with little yappers in their laps?
Or eating?
Or finding your pack of cigs and lighting one?
Or changing the radio station?
I don’t disagree phones are bad and I’m
Not great about it, but just assuming a phone is the only method of distracted driving is ridiculous.

Road construction worker disguises would serve two purposes.
First you’ll nab lots of fools playing on their phones.
Second, when word gets around, people will be more careful in construction zones.
Construction zones are everywhere so you don’t even need to create them for the project. Just find one that’s not active and have a few cops with orange vests leaning on shovels or sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck.

This is ridiculous, they don’t have a real crime to investigate. I’d tell my CO to go kick rocks if he wanted me to do that?

Would you call this a brush with the law?
And I bet if doing it in the summer's heat, they are bushed by the end of their shift.

Having your phone in your hand while driving is a real crime. There's literally a law against it. Over 425 people lost their lives last year because of it.
I wish this would catch on across the country. First offense - $1,000 fine. Second - $1,500. Third - $2,000 and license suspended for 30 days. I have zero sympathy for smooth brains who's entire world revolves around their face being constantly stuck in their phones.
InB4 the 50 dv's from the 80% of users on this site who drive while staring at their phones to see if their last reel made it to 100 likes.

Absolutely this

The problem is it’s a steady erosion of liberties and when these ‘laws’ keep getting passed, you realize all your freedoms are gone because it’s so subtle.

In this specific example, I completely disagree. I seriously doubt anyone would deny that driving while staring at your phone is very dangerous, is wildly rampant and greatly increases the chances of an accident. There's only one way to reel that in and that is to make it illegal to do. And the grace period for the new law ended yesterday. Today they are "supposed to" move into enforcement and I fully support it.
