I alluded to being in a similar spot on the front page. What kind of irked me is that the bump would finally put me in the 6 figure range when I know many others my age had been clearing 6 figures for quite some time in my industry. It was a smaller company and I knew others in the company were making WAY way more than what I was even with the raise. They all had new houses on parcels of land, new expensive vehicles, stay at home wives, swimming pools, etc. Even with irresponsible spending, it would be hard to do all of those things if they were only making a little more than me. That's why I took offense when they balked at my reasonable raise considering how long I had been there at at a lower industry salary.

He should obviously look out for what’s best for his family, but I doubt very seriously that his current company would give him a 50k raise. If they were willing to pay him that much more for his work output he would already be making more than his current salary. It definitely depends on what type of company he’s working for and what his current salary is, but I would guess that most salary pay bands don’t have much more than a 50k span per position.

Not saying his current employer has to match the $50k, but to ask for nothing because you agreed to your current salary is fricking dumb.

What do you do that you can get a $50K per year increase (~$24/hour if your were hourly)?

i did this a few years ago. Actively went out and sought a new offer with a better position title.
Came to my current boss and said I ma being offered this, make a better offer or i will leave, but i would prefer to stay. Dont be an arse about it, just honest.
I got a better offer from my current employer and stayed. But you have to be 100% prepared to pack up shop and move out if they say no.

The language in different jobs/industries indicates different pay structures. Or he just hasn't been given a raise or COLA in a long time--started at the bottom of the pay range and is now being offered something toward the top.

It might be that they have their own contracted recruiter/head hunter with a network of other recruiters/head hunters. They float that persons resume to others in their network and drum up interest and share commissions if they take a different job.

I utilized this tactic once and asked for a potential salary match that was double my current pay at the time. My department head responded that he couldn't do it as I'd be making significantly more than him. Smiled and told him I'd be leaving for the new position.
I agree that it probably won't work out well in the long run if you stay.

Be certain the present value of this raise is greater than the present value of your future with your existing company. There were 3 times I thought about leaving company. I did not. 30 years later and retired early and financially independent. Hindsight, made the right non-moves along the way.
Do not underestimate the relationships you have today at current company and how that may help you down the road.
Look at total compensation (benefits, PTO, 401k company contributions, bonuses, education support, etc).
