The bank charges 3% for you to conveniently use your card so you can pay that or pay in cash so you don't pay the bank charge.
Why do we need government to step in and tell small businesses that they have to hide that from customers by pretending the item just costs more?
If people are so against banks charging 3% to process their card payments why don't they use cash instead of needing to have a pretend world set up for them by another government regulation?

I’m not blaming, there’s just a lot of folks, government included that think you can just magically do all this stuff for free.
I agree, government should not be involved as no one is forcing debit card use.

Who is this they? And you do understand this is a *network* fee, and is device independent, right?
And what mysterious payment network that doesn't charge processing fees will your magical reader connect to? Because it won't be Visa, Amex, or MC processing those transactions for free.

If card processing costs are so objectionable that the government needs to pass a law to hide them from people, then government needs to address something other than simply forcing small businesses to be the ones to hide them. That's absurd.
If all the card processing fees are so understandable and fine--and I'm not saying they're not -- then why the hell are people complaining about paying them for the convenience of using their cards?
Why in the world would the government need to make a law that says you can't be honest about a fee?
Who are they trying to help?

This is incorrect
This only applies to businesses with card machines that were signed up for surcharge pricing which is a fairly old type of account. It violates visa and mc rules. Most are on a dual pricing plan which allows fees on debit cards. Not much will change but there is tons of confusion because news and people are making posts like this without understanding.

Yep. More and more of the small businesses are going to stop accepting debit cards on large purchases AND raise their prices.
The huge mega-chains have already built this into their pricing strategies.
I wouldn't be surprised if the huge mega-chains were behind this and I can almost bet that they are pushing for more of this in other states and eventually pushing to have credit card fees abolished.
All to push the small businesses and medium chain-stores out of businesses out of the game.
